Question Wobb Wrrr Wobb Wrrrr = ???

That is sort of the noise that i am STILL hearing from my car. If any of you have noticed, our cars have a funny echo which makes it hard to track down noises. I've changed the wheel bearings, 2 weeks ago. I also rotated and balanced the tires. The noise is still there. You can really hear it at low speeds while cornering really hard. Like if you were going about 25mph and going through a straight line of cones. What do the CV's sound like when they are going out??? I think i'm just going to give in and take it to the mechanic so that i don't keep buying parts! It's just one of those noises that I'm not really comfortable driving with and the radio just can't seem to drown it out.

Thanks for the help.

Forgot something. When you are about to stop and applying the brakes, grrrr, grrrr, grrrr,, but in a wobb wobb kind of fashion. It is a hard then soft noise, like an unbalanced kind of noise. I think you get the point. Its just hard to describe on a BB.

Detail the car. Really! Remove the tires and pressure wash the area. Clean the brakes and calipers well.

Check for clearance on the wheels and the body.

I once had an awful noise in the 964 and it ended up being a nut shell stuck between the brake caliper and the disc.

Or the time a rock got stuck in the grove of a tire and made a noise as it rotate it. tuck tuck tuck tuck

In the 951 I also had a weird noise that I thought was a fan hitting the shroud... ended up being one of the tie wraps that hold the cables in place. It was touching the fan blade... I almost broke the shroud trying to twist it so the noise would go away...

Take out the brake pads and look at them... see if there are any imperfection in the material. When was the last time you did a brake job?

When you get down to noises like these it is hard to figure out where is coming from and what is causing it. Again, start by cleaning everything well... at the end, if you still can't find the culprit, at least you will have one clean car.

It could be the CVJs Inspect them to see if a boot is broken, bolts are loose or if you see grease around the CVJ area. As a good measure you could remove them, clean them out and repack with new grease. Remember to use new bolts when re-installing.

I second Jaime: check & clean the brakes, check CV's.
Also: check wheel bearing play in the front.
If hammered in with a punch, the outer race will re-seat in some 100 mls or so, increasing the bearing play.

Because of it my wife ended up calling me mid way to her work because the car would not move... a few bolts came loose, grease was everywhere, etc...

Better use new bolts and some loctite to avoid any mishaps...

Brakes and rotors are less than a year old.

I'll pull it apart this weekend and do some cleaning and regreasing. Thanks for the ideas. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hans- i checked the front bearings already because i was getting some noise from that area. I gave the lock nut about another 1/4 turn and that seemed to fix the front. Also, my exhaust was rubbing because the rubber hanger had broke. I have considerably less noise than before, but the noise that I can't find is the one that seems to bother me the most.

OK, next:
- hard cornering = wheel turned max. to the stop?
What about tire clearence in the inner fender?
- is the sound also there if you slowly turn the wheel till it hits the stop at max.?
Sound starts suddenly somewere half way more than increasing from nothing in volume?

Then: could be the a-arm ball joints or bushings.
Also the sway bar joints get suspected then.
What happens is that caster & camber are changing when you turn the wheel, chanching the load on the suspention bushings etc in both force and direction. With some worn stuff the change of direction of the force will "flip" the play to the opposite side (and possibly back again depending on the amount of play in the system).
This will cause a sort of knocking sound.

You have acces to an car lift.
Well....., they come in very handy for the checks on suspention systems.
