Question OT: Smoke from a Passat VR6?

I was driving home from work last night and I came up behind a VW and I noticed small amounts of smoke coming out of the back end. So, after getting the driver to pull off the highway, we slowly lifted the hood. Smoke was coming out of the passenger side of the engine. But there is so much plastic on the top of the engine I could see where it was coming from. I told the driver I wouldn't drive it and she(and yes I would done the same thing irregardless of who was driving) called her father for a ride home to VT(1.5 hours).

After I drove off it started bothering me was it coolant or oil? Driving behind it, it smelled really bad. I could have at least checked the oil level. I know some of you love our cousins, the VWs. Does anyone know of such an issue with the VR6(she said it was only 2 years old) and could she have driven home by just topping off the coolant or do you think it was oil?

If you have not already done so, try posting this same question on one of the Forums at VW Vortex
