Default Can a 924s be competative in SCCAs new STR class?

Hey guys,
I've been looking over the new rules for the STR class that the SCCA is going to be running next year. I really like the idea of being able to do more mods to the car and run more wheel and tire than (up to 9" and 255) i can in E-Stock or A-street tire... But they have stacked the class with the NB and NC miatas, the S2000, and the 944s2/968 (theres some debate about letting the 2.5 boxter run).

It sounds like a lot of fun but at the same time i feel rather intimidated by the cars i listed... I don't want to waste my time either, as i could just stay in ES and get some R-comps and do decently (maybe). I'm underpowered, and I'm just not sure that the extra tire will help that much.

Heres the link to the current rules, they are still subject to change. scroll down a little in the PDF to get to it.

Any thoughts? anyone planning to run the class?

Unfortunately it seems that the 924s/8v 944 only has it's pick of what class it wants to loose to a Miata in.

In ES, the NA & NB Miata's beat us (who are then beaten by the 2nd gen MR2's).
In CSP the NA Miata's beat us
In STR, the NB & NC Miata's will beat us (who will then be beaten by the S2000's).
Nobody I know runs a 944 in SM, FP or EM, but it would be interesting to know how that goes.

Unfortunately the 944 is just too heavy for it's displacement in nearly every level of SCCA autocross. That's why I'm jumping ship next year to a car/class combination where I will be on a more equal playing ground.

That said, I do intend on running my (currently) CSP 944 in STR next year for at least a couple events to see how it does.

Hmm that kinda sucks :P What are you thinking of switching too if you don't mind me asking? The 944 is not allowed in SM IIRC, that would be fun though you can do motor swaps in SM so long as its the same make (9x4s3!). EM would be killer for a LS1 car, so long as you go all the way, dunno about FP though.

Edit: i also noticed they are letting the 911 3.2 carrera in STR as well...

I'm going to FM (with the F440 in the signature).

There's no reason to go to SM2 (where the 944 IS legal) to do a 968 motor swap, as a 944 S2 motor swap is already legal in FP (typically a weaker class than SM2). There's also no reason to go to EM for an LS1 motor swap, as you can already do this in XP.

I've already seriously toyed with both options, but just couldn't justify the $$$ required to likely still be uncompetitive at the national level. Especially when I can likely build a FTD-capable F440 for well under $2000.

I think the 944 can hold its own against the miata in ES on larger (airport runway courses) because of the power advantage. I always have, at least. I have never been able to compete directly against an ES MR2 but I bet the MR2 would come out on top.

There is no way that anything in STR will touch the S2000....and not the 924/944 at the very least.

You're welcome to buy my ES car and try it though.
