I'm sanding my car down for paint and I'm thinking I'll fill the gaps in the back panel flush and some for the under tail light piece (where it meets with the quarter panel) .

Has anyone done this out of curiosity?

I had my Guards Red 944 repainted last year. The painter filed in those seams with it looks like tape and painted over it. It bothers me every time I look at the back of the car. I wish he had not done it. He never said ahead of time he was going to do it because I would have said please don't. I can snap some pictures if you like. I think it looks better with the seams/lines like it is suppose to look.

I was thinking of a "rear light bar" style rear panel with a recess for a license plate... body coloured?

I think it might update the rear especially with a euro bumper... unless it's been done and looks like poop.

I agree with Sands944 - I've seen it done and it really does not look as good as you'd hope.

That is my 2nd 944 (84 N/A) in the back ground. I had about $1100 total (including car) invested in that and put 60K miles on her before selling it for 3K to the first person that looked at it

I was gonna say the same thing...

But on a more serious note, I'm only looking to fill in the seams on the top panel and the piece directly uner the tail light (with wide Porsche sticker), at the spot where it meets with the qp.

My painter filed in the seams on the top panel. The one under the rubber spoiler above the lights.

I actually like the panel lines. Gives the flow a little break, I don't like the "one piece" look.

I'd say go for it. I've always planned to do this upon repainting, since the seams always bothered me as well.

If you have the option, have them fill it with metal (lead?) and then smooth with bondo.

Here is the problem I see.

I picked up the car below a couple months back. Picture was taken the day I got it. Look at the front panel where it meets the fender. Someone sealed in and painted over the seems. It adds a bit of a clearner look, but you can't remove a fender of nose piece individually without grinding, cuting, painting.

The nose piece on this car is dented now. Where before it would be a super simple fix, now it is going to be a major task and may require new fenders too.

why you do not lose those sdeskirts at all?

1) You don't actually know that I haven't. That picture is 3 months old





(okay, they are still on the car)

2) They are rivieted onto the car.
3) The paint under the side skirts is NOT good looking.
4) I have only put 180 miles on the car total and have the torque tube and clutch out for rebuilding right now. (too busy with other projects on the car to worry about the side skirts).
5) When I have it running well enough to worry about body work then I will work on it. These are not as simple as just removing them.
