Default Spark Plug Gap?

I bought a set of Bosch Super's and they are pre-gap'd to 0.044". I looked up the proper size and it's 0.028-0.032". Did they just give me the wrong plugs or what?

No, right plugs.

You need to gap them yourself

Buy one that looks like this. They work MUCH MUCH better than the "ramped" kind.

Maybe I'm being dumb, but 0.044" is greater than 0.028-0.032." How would I make the gap smaller? Every spark plug I've ever used before had a very small gap from the factory and you made the gap larger to get to the proper size (0.028-0.032").

Just tap the plug on a hard surface to bend it down a little....

That's what the black part of the above tool is for, you hook it on the tab and bend it down or up a bit.

That is true, but its hard to move the electrode a tiny amount sometimes. A little tap usually works better for me.

A man after my own heart. When all else fails get a bigger hammer. Brut force rules.

DON"T BEND THE ELECTRODE!!! There's a Porsche TSB that specifically refers to this.

What you need are the special Porsche spark gap shims, part number 999.609.133.01, US$7.89 each from Sunset. They're 0.1mm thick, so you'll need 2 per plug.

Cheers,
Mike

We've always bent the electrodes. For decades car repair shops and hot rodders have done it this way and the cars miraculously still seem to run. Gap .028 to .030.

Gap is spec'd 0.028" +0.004" (0.7mm +0.1mm). So I gap to 0.028" since the gap is only going to grow as the plug wears.

This made me think of something.

I'm running Bosch Platinum +4s in my 944. Am I right to assume they're pre-gapped? Because, how the hell would I gap a four pronged plug?
