Slack in the rear 83 Porsche 944??
I have an 83 944 and whenever i shift gears a little rough or I am off and on the gas without having the clutch to the floor it bangs back and forth like something is loose. Any suggestions to why??I have high milage on the car but i dont want to hear that the problem is too many miles i just want to hear what the problem could be and how to fix it. Thanks!

I have a very similar problem with my '83. I feel alot of "slapping" back and forth just under/behind my butt when I'm off/on the gas. It is a very heavy feeling. I'm pretty sure it is my transmission mounts (our early cars have two). I bought a nice set of used mounts for $40 from a local shop, it's just too dang cold for me to do the work right now.
Of course, your problem may be quite different. But, it may be worth it to raise the back and inspect your mounts. If the rubber looks dried or there appears to be oil/gunk on them, they could be the culprit.
Oh yeah, it may be your clutch center slapping against the metal cogs because your rubber hub is broken and gone. If I were you I'd hope it's the mounts.
Good luck.

Sonny it sounds like your clutch hub has broken, you can check this by parking the car on a level surface with the brake off but the car in gear, push the car forward and backwards, if the disc is O.K. the car won't move, if the disc is broken the car will move a little and there will be a clunking noise. Good luck Mark T.

Mr. Papy, I'll try to find this thread and revive it with my results when I actually get to working on it. For crying out loud, it's March and it's still below 30F!!! Argh.

Hey, sorry I missed your question about the lift. No - I don't have one. You can change the mounts on an early 944 with jack stands and a jack. Just lift the car and secure it on the stands. The mounts are on each side of the tranny. Carefully support the tranny with a jack and do one side at a time. I just inspected the used mounts I bought and one of them is actually bad! I got ripped off. The rubber is separating from the metal on one side. Vertex Auto carries our mounts for about $60 each, so I figure I might have to buy those. Anyway, as I said previously, I'll let you know if this solves my problem. And good luck with yours.

I m having the same problem with my 85.5. It started after a spirited session at the track. I tried the moving back and forth and it will. How much should it move considering lash and all that. Its too cold to get much involved but soon, very soon, i'm putting the battery in and its time.

Quicky way to determine if it is the clutch hub.
1) Jack up rear of car & support on jackstands
2) Put car in neutral
3) Remove large inspection cover on tranny bellhousing
4) Reach in and twist the driveshaft.
If your hub is bad, you will have play in the drive shaft. If not, the driveshaft will not turn by hand. If you do have play, then-
1) Unhook neg battery terminal
2) Remove starter
3) Inspect inside front bellhousing for rubber chunks (a dead giveaway of a bad rubber center clutch disk)

So, looks like tomorrow I'll be following Dave951M's instructions.
Were you able to fix your problem Papy?
