I'd talk to George at Autoatlanta. They might not be the greatest parts store, but they know more about 914's than just about anyone. They'll be able to walk you through all the different models, boring options, etc.

The phone number is somewhere on www.autoatlanta.com, be sure to ask for George Hussey.

There was an Excellence article about putting 911 engines in the 914, that would be an interesting way to go. Lots of folks have done it, I suspect, and the know-how is out there.

That would be a FAST automobile...

The model 914 used to be available as 914 (/4) and 914/6
914 was marketed through VW (in europe that was don't know for USA), had an VW type 4 (411 / 412) 2 liter 4 cyl engine with electronic fuel injection.
This engine is later also used in the type 2 transporter (air cooled VW Van)and has been available with carburettors in that type as well.
If tuned well (and the sufficient ammount of $$$ are poured in) you can get over 250 HP from these engines.

The 914/6 was marketed through Porsche and came with an 911 engine (2.2 litre?)
Worked for an VW dealer in those days so dont know too much about the /6.

John D has one, very beautifully restored.

He might be able to show some light here

Conversions are possible but.....

AutoAtlanta has very poor quality of service from my own experience. George may know his 914 stuff, but I wouldn't invite him over for dinner.

Hey Andre, I am actually building a 914 track car at the moment and the engines are great because they are VW. One of the things that I did was bought some "Hot VW" mags and other VW mags and looked at some of the Volkswagen tuners and I found some pretty trick stuff! I had my engine built by a VW racer and it was done on a budget. I spent around 2,000 on parts and paid the guy 200 to build it for me and about 300 more for machine work. The engine took a bit to get all done and I will go get it this week. It should be a mean little engine once its tuned, but we didnt order "the best" parts, just a nice upgrade from stock. The exhaust on the type IV engines is pretty cool, i am going to run a 4 to one header and its only about 400 bucks. A great company that does race engines is called FAT, they build some incredible engines! Any more questions that you might have I am avalable to help you as much as I can. E-mail me at DustinWayman@sbcglobal.net if ya need anything.
