Talking 86 951 Red Repaint Pictures

Here's some pics from my recent (just got it back last Friday) repaint. For the record my total was $7,159... about $2000 of that was replacement parts ($500 scuff guard!) and body work.

I'm so happy!

Wow <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" /> !!

I don't know what is more shocking - the brilliance of the paint or the price.

That seems like a lot of dough for a repaint.

Enjoy!

That does seem a bit high for a repaint, but my repaint was 4k and it wasn't nearly as nice as that one. You get what you pay for in regards to paint. Looks like you chose an excellent shop. Congrats!

Dax,

That paint does look sharp. I just had my '86 Garnet Red Metallic car repainted, and it looks very nice. However, close inspection reveals some flaws:

About a half dozen small spots of overspray on some of the trim. None are apparent unless you look very close. I managed to remove most of them by rubbing with WD-40.

A bit of overspray of primer in the doorjambs (I was able to remove most of it with clay) and overspray of primer on one of the tires.

Here and there some small bumps in the paint. Perhaps there was some dust on the car? Again, this is not noticeable unless you really look hard.

There are two spots I noticed where it looks like the paint ran a little. Yet again, not very noticeable.

I'm curious if there are any similar flaws in your paint job. I spent $3000, which included the paint job and repair of a cracked front valence. All in all, the car looks great and much improved over where it was before. I just wonder if I was expecting too much in expecting total perfection for $3000.

I'm looking forward to when I can put a coat of wax on the car and get a little more aggressive in addressing some of the overspray issues.

Killer looking 951! And I like the factory correct Phone Dials too!

But the color of the SKY in Oregon is almost as impressive! Sweet!

I can comment on the paint flaws on mine. I expected flawless for 4k, but that isn't what I got. In retrospect, I would have gone with a different shop.

Anyways, on mine there were two spots, one on each side on the lower rail(where its bumpy between the front and rear tires), those drips were removed on site with some color sanding and all is well now. My biggest complaint is two fold. One, I had some previous sanding marks from a poor repair on the right side, those were not sanding down appropriately and you can see some very small sanding marks if you look closely in the drivers rear quarter. Also, on one drip rail and one part of the door, they burned through the paint....its not really noticeable(samll pencil line), but i know its there and it pisses me off.

This is the 3rd vehicle i've had repainted and ever time its a new experience. I have yet to have one 100% positive.

Cost - the cost pre-body work/parts was somewhere between 4-5k. I would expect to pay at least 4k for a decent job. I only received once quote that was lower than that, and they seemed like kind of a shadey operation (they got kicked out of the Better Business Bureau.)

Flaws - only a couple of big ones, and I've already made an appointment to go back and have them fixed: 1) top of rear bumper didn't get sanded/buffed 2) small bumps in a couple spots(really hard to find these.) I have no overspray that I can find, no paint on the trim (this was all taken off.) I'm amazed how I can't find any lines on the door jams or the bottom of the hood (since they weren't repainted.)

I would strongly suggest to anyone getting their car repainted to make sure they go over every inch of their car very carefully before paying anything. There were a couple major issues with my car that I almost didn't catch before I took delivery on it. The paint guy had no problem going back and fixing these (and of course didn't charge me anything extra.)

Thanks for all the positive comments! <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

price doesn't necessarily mean quality. We got a shop here in Ft. Worth TX (Ft. Worth Autobody) that is maybe slightly on the high side of average. I would have them paint my car before I'd turn it over to a 'supposed' Porsche bodyshop. The PO of my car had a little paint-work done by the place that did all the Porsche dealers work -- they painted right over the plastic chip gard on the fender (thank you very much!)

jeez i got quoted 6-8k easy for a total repaint from a few reputable shops in town.
I cant afford that right now, so Im most likely just having the rear fixed and the front sprayed to the doors. cost..right under 4k.

The lower front black body piece that goes underneath the front of the car/engine. The part number is 95150507502, and the actual cost was $479.93.

It's funny, because I picked it up and held it before they installed it. One giant piece of plastic... <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

I think most people don't appreciate how much good body/paint work costs. And when I say good, I mean somewhere between Maaco and a Hot Rod custom paint shop (read: $15k paint jobs, and up!) Everyone I talked to about my paint job was shocked at the price. Nobody pays attention to body/paint work because 90% of the time the insurance company pays for it.

Wish I could find a way to get my insurance company to pay for the repaint!

Wow, I can't believe you bought that piece new! That's one of those moments where you hear the price, say "okay, I'll let you know" and then hang up the phone
