Oil Weights
I am about ready to change my oil for the first time since I've owned the car and I am wondering what sort of oil weights people use. The car is in southern california so it wouldn't have to deal with any extreme temperature conditions, with heat being the more prevalent concern.
I am gonna stick with regular oil instead of synthetic and was wondering what would be best for the car.
Thanks for all help ahead of time.

Hi Paul,
I have recently changed the oil in my 1988 NA to Mobil 1, 15/40w.
It seems to do the job really well, However I would advise you to get an original Porsche filter at the same time, they are not expensive and at least you will have pace of mind.
These cars are so fussy with their oil system so please look after it !!
Also make sure that you check the level often after refilling, for more info see my last posting "will it go pop ? "
Good luck.....

I second the comment about the OEM filter. There is a check valve in the OEM filter that keeps all of the oil from running out when the car is not running. Some aftermarket filters have this valve and some do not.
Also, be sure to get a new washer for the oil drain plug – I try to keep several around so that I always have one when I change my oil. However, I have reused a washer before with no ill effects or oil leakage.
You would be well advised to stuff lots of rags around the bottom of the filter before you remove it – regardless of how careful you are you are going to make a mess. I also place a plastic bag over the filter and I get the filter into the bag as soon as it is loose to minimize the amount of spillage as I am removing the filter from the car.
Since you are going to run dino oil, be sure to change it every 3,000 miles. I run Redline synthetic and I change it every 6,000 miles with an oil filter change every 3,000 miles.
Have fun.
