Post Ramps!

Quick question.. what is the best ramp in terms of quality, brand, weight rating etc.?

I ask because I don't want to buy a cheap one and end up smushed.

I can't remember the brand, but they're made of metal, painted yellow, and have round holes along the surface. You should also buy the extensions, which are made of red and black plastic.

They have them at most auto parts stores. I bought mine at Autozone for around $30. The extensions are sold separately and you really need them to get our low cars up on the ramps. Can't remember the price, though.

I use that same set for the past 6+ years with no problems. Not sure what vehicle weight you are looking to support, but works on the S2 just fine.

Only other tip I have is once you set the ramps in front of the car, make sure the steering wheel is straight and get a pole to lay across the front tire (along the length of the car) to make sure the ramp is square to the tires; edge of pole does not go outside of the ramp edge. Then just pull up and you should be centered on the ramp. Only mention this because there were times before when I thought the ramp was square to the car and it was off.

HTH,

Cheers,

Make sure you check the width of the ramps against your tire size. I saw a set of the yellow ones at Sears and they said it can only handle a 9" tire. This is approx a 225 tire, so if you've got anything bigger it won't fit.

Ken, I have 225 on my 7" tires in the back I believe. Don't you think 9 would be a bit bigger?

BTW, do you like your SFR short shift? Did it reduce the shift greatly? I've heard the autothority sort of "clicks" into gear - does yours?

Thanks,
Matt

Just a minor cautionary note... the fancy yellow ones in the Griot's Gar(b)age catalog (the ones with the plastic extensions) _will_ slide on a smooth concrete floor as you try to drive up on them. At least, such is my experience with the front of the 968. The back goes up fine. I finally drilled four holes in the concrete, and dulled some nails to use as removable pins, to create 'stops' to keep the dam' things from sliding. I had already tried putting rubber hose along the edge; did no good.

But they are sturdy, and will take almost any low-nose car with the extensions.

The black plastic ones (~$50 from Griots; ~$25 from the local big-box parts store) will also slide, but not as consistently. I think they're branded "Rhino", if memory is not serving my wrong. They're rated at 2500 lbs. each, but do not nest for storage.

Jim, still planning on a lift, just gotta find one that works for my whole 'fleet'..8)

Instead of buying the extensions, if you're a cheapskate (like myself) you can place a couple of 2X8's in front of the ramps (assuming your car is about stock height). You don't have to put them "on" the ramp. I put them flush against the tip of the ramps and my front end just squeaks right up there. Of course, the rear doesn't need any helpers at all.

I use the rhino's and they're shaped so that you don't need extensions to clear the front of a 951. I have had no problems with them sliding either, although I do approach and climb them slowly. Picked them up for $30 at Autozone.

You can prevent any ramps from sliding by attaching a thin (12") piece of nylon strapping to the ramp so that the tire rolls over that strapping before hitting the leading edge of the ramp. I use nylon strapping left over from my trailer tie-downs

I have the Rhino ramps and they work great. They have a rubber pad on the bottom which keeps them from sliding (at least I haven't had any sliding problems). They are rated for something like 3 times as much weight as the 944 puts on them, and are relatively inexpensive too. I also like that they are one piece.

Schlag, I don't know how low your car is, but in my case I couldn't get my 944 S2 cabrio up onto the Rhino ramps, and the car is stock height. I also didn't particularly care for the fact that they're made of plastic.

I got a pair a long time ago (10 years?) they are black, very sturdy and have raised lip holes for traction, but they wont fit under the front of the 924s at all. Ill have to replace them- thanks for the info!
