Post Holy Craptastical DME Relay Magic !

the DME relay must really be like the CPU to our cars (if our cars were computers) or something... seriously.

ok so at the last AutoX spidey (from rennlist, his name escapes me, anyone?) happened to give me his spare DME relay because he sold his 944S. Cool. I was bugging Adrial to get me a spare anyway so this was a very nice gesture. I didn't "need" one but I figured it would be good to have a spare.

so today i was reading the thread about A/C idle dropping when popping into neutral and someone said it might be the DME relay. of all things, why?

after work i decided to swap his dme for mine... fired the car up... immediately i notice shifting is easer.. no more holding the clutch at that breaking point.. no more having to match revs either! wow! also.. car now doesnt blow massive amounts of hot air at me! wow! and.. finally.. yes.. a/c is on and the idle only drops a 100 or 200 below 900 before coming up.. no shudder anymore..wowie

wow

just wow.

i realize its taboo to post positive 944 comments on rennlist but.. i couldnt help myself

i guess im the only one with the magic dme..

well... not that magical.. although it really did clean up my idle (therefore allowing me to shift easier, and hang to a gear easier while not on the throttle, and use ac) it didnt really fix my warm air out of the vents problem. i guess this is just a 944 downfall. lame!

good to hear it helped! I'd pick up a spare anyway because I got that one off a wreck in a junkyard, so its hard to tell how much life it has left in it. It really is amazing how much that little relay can affect the driveabilty of the car. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Did you eat any weird mushrooms before you put that relay in? That's crazy that a relay would do that, but then the world of electronics is a dark and mystical place.

I had a heater valve that would close when I started the car, but after a few minutes it would open. I guess the diaphram was weak I had already purchased a new valve so I went ahead and put that one on and now when I shut the car off I guess the valve opens til I start it again and I've got hot air til the water in the core cools down . I guess I've got a vacuum leak but I guess a future project will tell.

interesting
maybe my heater valve is doing the same thing...... closin on startup but slowly opening up after a few minutes

still. why would it blow cool air at idle? im just thinking the 944 hvac system is flawed. period.

no mushrooms btw idle is way better though - i swear!

My car does the same sort of thing. When i'm idling I don't feel hardly any air on my feet(everything is off and the **** is turned all the way to the cool side), but then when I get going I feel the hot air from the engine bay pour in on my feet (no change in settings), its not that great of a feeling. Maybe I should get a spare DME relay, how much do they cost and where can I get one?

Sorry... I've been distracted by some other stuff.

What I meant by the vacuum change is that there is a change in the vacuum psi from idle to various engine speeds, and maybe your valve is weak and at idle it eill close and at higher speeds it will open.

The bad valve that I had, you could start the car and watch it close and removed from the car, apply vacuum to the port and watch it close internally just to be sure the passage was blocked but while I was driving the valve would open.

I had already bought valve and clips since they were cheap when I was at Zims without checking mine just assuming it was bad.

On an S it's very easy to change the valve, it's in the open by the waterpump but I hear that on other cars it's on the back of the motor and hard to get to.

So just thought WTF and replaced the valve that I thought looked good just because I hsd a new one and that turned out to be the fix. Now I assume I have a vac. leak since it won't stay shut with the engine off.
