It's that time folks. I've been looking at these cars for quite some time. At first I wanted a turbo.... but well, it's a little out of my budget maintenance-wise. So anyway, I think I've decided on a 944S2, but am having a bit of trouble convincing the parents. I'm still in their house for another 14 months so I kinda have to go by their word.
My dad is fine with me getting the car except he is convinced I will have it in the garage, working on it rather then driving it. He's worried about me being left without a car while in college. He's also worried about finding parts for the car. However, I'm not, and it's 100% my money... I just need to make him happy. Anyone know anything I should tell him to help me get this dream car?

Look for and get the best 944S2 you can find. Maintenance on even the S2 can be as expensive as a turbo.
Make sure you find one that has had the cam chain guide / tensioner replaced recently. (They need to be replaced about every 100k miles)
If you find a well maintained S2, it will be worth the premium you pay for it.
Just my $0.42

Welcome to the board!
Also on parts... I don't think that's much of an issue. There are a handful of good mail order places that have parts for cheap. Then if you have a local dealership that's another avanue for the hard to find or odd ball type parts.
And if you're a novice mechanic then you should be able to do most of the work yourself on these cars. Which can save some serious dough on labor.

Well, thanks for the quick replies you two. I'm looking for an S2 with under 100k miles, closer to 70k is preferred. Finding a car with all records is a top priority, and there are enough around here for sale that I can be pretty picky.
Thats what I figured about the parts Raceit. Jim Ellis Porsche isn't but 25 miles from here, and if I do find a car I like I'll have it inspected by them also.
I don't know if I'd even consider myself a novice. The most I've done is change the belts in my dads old ford ranger, along with 2 drum brakes and disks.... tires, oil change... etc. Nothing major.

This one was Just on eBay and didn't sell (owner was looking for $11k) - it's a Beautiful car. Try contacting the seller if you're interested.

This Turbo is exactly like mine, and have been around the auction block a few times - the seller might be willing to deal (if you decide to go Turbo over S2):

If you find something local and want someone to help with a preliminary glance, just post here and someone should be able to help (myself included). Good luck with your search and convincing dad!

Hey Brian-
You musta missed the thread I had on that blue S2--turns out it has a salvage title, and what looks like a rear-end accident fix! Nice color though.

Brian,
AndyK started a post about that S2. The car was salvaged, then repaired. He may have service records, but there is/was something major wrong with that car.
Only a fool woud buy his car for 11k, and pass on my car for 1500 more with 46k less miles, all the work, and more he did, and no accidents ever.
Oh yeah my car has a problem, a major major problem. when the original owner bought the car at the end of his lease, he said it had 60k which was the amount he was allowed to drive the car. He paid citibank what a S2 with 60k was worth instead of a S2 with 32k. I have the backup showing the deal. but then again if he can get 11k with a "savage" title, I should be able to get 20 k for mine.
guess thats why im not asking 20k for mine, and not one person bid on his car at the low low starting price of $3500.

Keep your options open and don't fall for the first (or second) car that you see. I looked for several months for the best 951 or S2 that I could find. I found a lot of dogs and a few maybes. I was all set to fly down to FL to inspect and probably buy a car when a pristine S2 showed up in the local paper - 3 miles from my house!
You may be familiar with these links but I threw them in anyhow:

I just went by German Auto Tech (I think that was the name of the place) and looked at a fairly nice Black '91 944S2. The exterior was in good+ condition (a little messy due to the rain we've been getting), I fooled around with a few things, checked the hatch, under the hood, but didnt have the chance to drive it. It has 130k miles, which is a few too many for my dad. Also, records are missing. A few interior details (The center piece on the shift **** is missing) but nothing major. We'll I'm gonna drive it I know that, but I won't be getting this machine.
