OT: Porsche 904 by Avanti? Have a look
I was going through auto show news and saw that avanti is producing cars again, one of them is a 904 replica. My goodness are they beautiful....

Ian,
I agree that is one nice car. I have seen some of the original Avanti cars from back when Studebaker owned and made them. But this, seems like the best of both worlds!
Have you seen any original 904's at any car shows? Also, I'm just curious, what does this one cost?
Michael

I couldn't find pricing info, I was thinking about contacting them just to see.
I have never seen an original 904, but it is by far one of my favorite car designs of all time, up there with the 288 GTO, and the Muira...

My Dad had a 1980 Avanti II when I was in high school. Very true to the original Stude, but with a Chevy drive train.
It had a big V8, but it was pretty heavy. Our Ford Torino Station wagon had similar 0-60 times. Of course the Avanti looked much better.
Driving back from Florida one year, we stopped at the Avanti factory in South Bend to pick up a part. It was made in the old Studebaker factory. We walked right into the factory floor full of old men building Avanti's by hand.

FWLIW as a price reference , there was an co. in England doing repro 904's ready to roll for, IIRC, around $60K US. But I don't recall if they were using a VW 4 or a Porsche 6. Some of their cost was in trying to faithfully reproduce the structure of the car, tho'. It looks like the Avanti 904 is basically a semi-assembled kit.

A friend in Cincinnati had a real 904. That was an incredible car. Sounded great. The car always turned heads when he took it out on the street.

My friend who works at Porsche told me that they have a shop in Stuttgart that actually restores/rebuilds old Porsches...from scratch if necessary.
So if you had, for example, a chassic of a 1973 911 Carrera RS, you could send it to this shop, and they would - step by step- completely restore the car. So you get a BRAND NEW classic model Porsche right from the factory.
He said that if they do not have the appropriate parts on hand, they will machine them. (!)
My friend saw a 550 Spyder being done when he was there.
