Default Cross Drilled Crank Question

So, what does a cross drilled crank look like? I assume that from the factory 1 and 4 would have a hole drilled all the way through and 2 and 3 would only have a hole through half. The holes on mine are identical and go all the way through on 1, 2, 3, and 4 - does that mean my crank is already cross drilled?

cross drilling refers to oil passages in the cranks not the casting / balance holes

Care to elaborate? This is the first time I've rebuilt an engine - I'm a newb. What do you mean by casting/balance holes? The holes I'm talking about are where the rod bearings go.

Thanks,
Max

Ok. Answered my question. All 83's and some 84's have x-drilled cranks, as per an older thread about this.

The following post contains a very helpful picture of a 928 crank that has cross drilled oil passages in both the main and rod bearings. Although a 928 crank is considerably different from a 944 crank, I think the picture does a good job of illustrating the routing of oil passages in a crankshaft and the concept of crossdrilling.

On the 944 crank the main bearings are all cross drilled. However the rod bearings are only 'half-drilled'--i.e. the passages don't go all the way through. Cross drilling the crank involves drilling the rod oil passages through to the other side of the journal and chamfering the edges of the new oil feed hole. Typically this is only done on the #2 and #3 bearings.

Correct . 83s also got the better rods .

If you need the loctite goo for the girdle and oil pump , Whistler Bearing is the only place in town who stocked it . They all so have the pilot bearings for a third of the price of the OEM one ( same exact bearing and brand ) .

Thanks. I have all the stuff I should need (more or less). I just bought the rebuild kit from vertex, which came with the loctite.
