Tranny questions
Hey,
It's possible to swap a turbo transmission into my S, right? I mean, direct replacement, old one out and new one in and that's it..?
What about the different gearing? How does the speedo get the reading - or, does changing the tranny matter with that?
How's the oil cooler thing done in the tranny; if I don't have one on my car, and I'd swap in a tranny from a car which had one, would I need something extra or is everything "inside" the transmission?
Thanks in advance, I might be getting a reasonable deal if it's going to work out...

Sami,
it's the direct swap.Have change one Turbo S box into 944 n/a.The oil cooler is just some "tube coil" located outside of turbo trans. If i can remember correctly turbo gears are taller (You get slower car,but more top speed).Speedo will work fine.
Same in finnish:
Sami,

Kiitos! (thanks)
So I went and bought a tranny that was taken out of a '91 turbo cabrio. The one in my car is not broken, I just wanted to get the limited slip differential... PCF autocross championship, here I come!

It must be possible to swap the LSD over to your original tranny.
Just the diff, the final drive stays from your original tranny.
Then you have the original ratio's (for the nice acceleration)and the LSD & cooling

I feel sorry for that '91 Turbo cab Only about 500 Turbo cabs made.Is this car for parts and is it in Finland ??
Hans is right, you can make a "combo" 944S & 951 trans.I would consider that swap, because with 951 trans your car will accelerate slower than with the original trans. On PCF autocross you will defenitely need good acceleration !

I can relate to the reduced acceleration with a turbo tranny in an n/a car. I put an '87 turbo tranny into my '86 n/a and there is a noticeable reduction in acceleration off the line.
When the revs are up, however, it is really fun.
I would try to do the swap if at all possible. Especially if you're going to focus on the autocrossing.

Olli, yes, the car is in Finland. A place called "Hauho", 16km from Hämeenlinna... the guy bought it from Belgium (I think), it has some body damage in the front but all the mechanicals work.
Hans, I asked the P-car dealer tech guys about swapping just the LSD part, and they gave me a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo about it being possible but requiring a lot of work and still not being 100% reliable. On the other hand, I don't know if it would be possible to just take the turbo tranny and only change in the final ratio, as the actual gear ratios are the same in the S and the turbo trannies... but I think I'll just go with the longer turbo final ratio, the difference isn't so great anyway...
As for the autocross, I'm not worried about the acceleration - once I get to speed I'm planning to stay there

[quote]...a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo about...

This must be the shimms, required to get the spacing in the diff right.
Needs to be done in theory every time you open up the diff housing.
The manual has a good precedure for this and the requirement for special tools is within limitations.
I just get the feeling those chaps dont want you do the job yourselves.

Olli, the guy has two turbo engines for sale if you need them
Hans, right on about the shimms, didn't just remember the word when I was writing the previous message. Doesn't really matter though, since I got the entire gearbox anyway - I'm willing to take the risk that my acceleration will be a bit slower, since the "new" tranny has 70.000km's less on the clock than the one I have in now, plus I think it's more durable (didn't the turbo tranny have those extra-strength 1st and 2nd gears?) so it just might take my abusive driving a bit better
I'll let y'all know how it feels when I get the car back.
