Unhappy NJ Speeding Ticket...waaaa!!

So I'm driving the 944 on the GSP, middle of nowhere near the shore (Aberdeen TWP), zipping along at 78mph (or so my speedo says), only car on the road. As soon as I see the strange grey roof sticking out of the bushes, I get that "uh-oh" feeling, and slow down--too late! State trooper lasers me, pulls me over (first time in 10 years), and says I was doing 84 in a 65 mph zone! I purposely kept the speed below 80 (3,950 on the tach in 5th gear), to make any speeding ticket less painfull.

I am screwed now...should be 4-points, and OUR insurance may go up! Ironic thing is, I was driving down to look at a 97 BMW 328is to replace the 944! The BMW is so quiet and fast, I would have a major problem keeping it under 80!

So, should I fight the ticket, and hope they drop the points, or should I just pay the $98 and live on??

Way to turn a decent driving day into a mess!

If you get a lawyer you can probally lose the ticket for about $200. Everytime I get a ticket I pay my lawyer $200 and the ticket never goes on my record.

In a lot of states you can talk to the prosecuting attorney before your court date and cut a deal to pay the fine, maybe take a lame driving class and not get the points, especially if it's your first in a long time.

All they want is the money, even if you fight it and win how much are court costs?

in fla you can take driving class to reduce the fine a bit and lose the points. if your ticket is expensive enough the discount pays for the driving school... d'oh!

Listen to me on this one, Andy--FIGHT THE TICKET!! Just for showing up they'll negoitiate down the speed, saving you points and major dollars down the road. The day off will pay off, and I'd even go and find one of those books that tells you strategy for court. FIGHT THE TICKET, or you'll be screwed.

I know from personal experience on RT 24 before they raised the limit to 65 . . .

Damian-
So, even if I WAS speeding, I could still say not guilty, and argue down the points? What is my arguement--I was only doing 70, and the laser was wrong? Or what?

Did you have a lawyer do it, or did you go yourself?

Fill me in! I really don't wanna drive like a saint for the next 5 years, fearing the dreaded 2nd ticket!

I would plead guilty with an explanation. This has worked best in the past for me. Of course they will take the cops word over yours. Just say you screwed up basically, and sometimes they are a little more lenient as opposed to you giving them some bs story they have heard before. Good luck.

If you say you were going 78 then you are can plead "not-guilty" because they are accusing you of going 84. What you actually tell them what speed you were doing is up to you.

I'm with Tricadek,,,all they want is that you pay somebody in the justice system some money. If you want to be certain to keep your points, and keep your insurance company out of it, pay a lawyer.

My friend has gotten pulled over 3 times. Each time he fought it the cop didnt' show up on the court dates. He didn't have to pay anything and they didn't show up on his record. Fight it.

Andy, Did the Trooper admit to using LASER. If so, laser is not (well last time I checked) admitted in court in the State of New Jersey as the sole method of speed detection as it is an imperfect scientific measurement. Call your lawyer real quick, that law may still stand. Hey, It worked for me last year.

Also some areas in NJ have options where you can pay 3 times the ticket and not have points added.

Just a thought

I second the idea about going to court because if the cop doesnt show up, (At least in Missouri) they have to drop the ticket. I had a friend do it 4 times and it worked every time. You just have to give up a day of work to hang around at the courthouse.
