Default Can you de-yellow the expansion tank?

okay so I was going to buy a brand new expansion tank because mine is way too yellow and I'd like to see the coolant level and I'd like to see the coolant level. I showed my coolant tank to one of the mechanics where I work and he told me to just take it out and clr / bleach it (CLR is an acid I think that is for lime calcium and rust) and he said that should get it clear enough.

would this work at all or would it be a waste of money to buy clr to try it? I don't care if it doesn't look brand new I just like to see the coolant level.

if not i'm going to look for a good used tank. I found a pretty clear nice used tank some guy was selling for 50 bucks but it was for a turbo and had an extra flange on it and I wasn't sure if you could block off that valve.

Note (in the link) that they aren't chemically dosing plastics that have to have structural strength to resist 7 psi, like the reservoir. The reservoir should be good with any common radiator cleaning products, but not sure they will make it clear again.

A new one is not that expensive. And with the yellowing it also gets more brittle.

I tried many different products on my old tank, none worked. Bought a new one.

CLR does alot more like clean stuff around the house. i used it a few times for the bathroom, but havent used it recently cause regular bathroom cleaner works. i use clr for the hard to get stuff.

rennbay has them for 79.95. but then you said you live in canada so shipping is a little extra.

umm... couldnt a new tank from another more common model car be fitted? Dont flame me for the suggestion, just saying. it should take up less room, and it'd be clear

I'd be surprised if you could find one with the correct fittings, and fittings at the right elevations (it matters). I'd be surprised if being yellow indicates any real problem, just old age. If it ain't broken, don't fix it!

Many of you guys are too young to remember, but the original 944/951 tanks weren't white when new.

Billy Mays' ghost here.....for OxyClean. Add two scoops to a yellowed porsche fuid tank and like magic...stains just disappear!

Call now and will give you two...not one...but two reasons why you should just get a new tank if it really bugs you!
