Does anyone know if there are any 82 model year 944's in the us because in one of my magazines they said 3921 were made for sale else where in the world?

82's were exported as an 83 model year. I dont believe any genuine 82's ever made it to the US unless an owner transported it.

I could be wrong but I remember reading that somewhere.

My Euro was produced in 82, but I believe it was sold as an 83... didn't make it over here until 85.

My '83 was built in March of 1982. It was the first car delivered in the midwest according to the Doctor I bought it from. They were going to buy a "Z" but then bought the "first in line" on the waiting list to get this car. The car originally came with an '82 924 owners manual-it has my VIN sticker on it, as well as the maintenance stamps. I can only guess that the dealership had not gotten it's owner's manuals before they delivered my car...

There was a guy here a while back (Craig944) who said his 944 was titled as an 82. He was kind of an excitable boy though.

My so-called late model (85.5) 944 was actually manufactured in November 1984. There is also a date stamp on April 1985 on the engine block (when it entered the US.). That tells me that porsche planned on having two 1985 models available that year, and there is no such thing as "early" or "late" 1985 models, only the original (85) and the modified (85.5)versions.

That being said, I'm sure that many of the '83 models were actually manufactured in 1982. Which also means there are bound to be 1982 models running around in Europe. And some of those had to have made it over to the US.

The plot thickens...

I just attempted to decode my VIN, and got 2 different versions from different websites.

WPOAA0947DN450521

WPO = Porsche
AAO = Coupe, 2.5l, seat belts only
94 = first two digits in type
7 = Check digit, no value
D = 1982 model year according to weissach.com
N = Neckarslum assembly line
5 = first digit in the serial #
0521 = 521st car built

Can anyone confirm this for me?

According to Peter Morgan's book:
D=1983 model year
E=1984 model year
F=1985 model year and so on.
My car is an "F". 1985 model year.

my car has a 'born on date' of April of 82. There are also 2 VIN numbers.
the plate in front of the battery has WPOZZZ94ZDN451030, the plate on the windshield post has WPOAA0944DN451030. It seems it started out as a Euro version but ended up here.

As has been mentioned before, the "zzz" vin is provisional for the build before the end market has been selected, hence the remarkable coincidence that the sequential numbers are identical (451030 in your case.) This concept has long been very elusive for insurance adjusters and customs officials!
