Default Mystery problem

I have an 89 944 TURBO w/70K. The car was running fine until one day...now when I push the gas there is a loss of power then it picks up slowly. The car hesitates...works better (not good) at higher RPM's. At idle the aftermarket gugage reads between 12 and 15 vacuum. The plugs appear to be fine and took all the vacuum lines attached to the j boot off and the j boot itself and inspected them seems OK. the K&N air filter was dirty (factory version) but it ran the same with the filter off. What vacuum reading should i get at idle and what do you think I sould try next?

Get a leakdown test done. Also check the intercooler boots to make sure there is not a tear that opens up under boost. BTDT
If you have an air compressor, make an adapter to fit over the intercooler after the turbo and put the engine under pressure (no more than 15 psi!) and get a spray bottle with a little dawn in it and spray down the hoses under the intake. That should show the vacuum leak.

Let us know what you find and we can go from there!

My 86 used to bog like that but I could accelerate slowly and cruise with no problem. I ended up solving mine with a new fuel filter and found a few vac leaks under the intake manifold at the cycle valve. The leak test described above is the best 1st option.

You should see around 18-20" at warm idle - 15ish or so at cold idle, so it definitely sounds like you have a leak.

I suspect that I might have a leak somewhere at high boost myself and of course and bought a tool from Arnnworx - it's basically a half fuel filter with a connection to your air compressor that you stick into your intercooler pipe and pressurize to no more than 15PSI to see if you can find any leaks. The ones at higher boost are hard to find - at idle, they won't show up because there's not enough pressure in the lines.

It's up under the back of the car by the transmission. Clark's has a write up on how to swap it out - it's pretty easy.
