Post Odometer help

I own a 1987 944 N/A, and the odometer quit working. With 174k on it, this is not necessarily a bad thing, but I do like to keep everything on the car working... even the odometer. Does anyone know where the odometer gets its signal from? I've looked at the posts, and gone thru my Haynes manual, and found nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll bet the drive gear is shot.

it is an easy fix and while you have the unit out of the dash you can replace the light bulbs.

The sensor is in the tranny, left side, just front & above the CV.
Fair chance that the connectors are corroded.
