Smile 944 Owner...again!

Drove the white 89 S2 home last night from Virginia to NJ. Took me 7 hours. I now own another 944! It will need stuff, but I got the car for $8700. Exterior is near mint, interior excellent except for some bolster wear, and corner seams stitching on the seats undone.

Aside from regular oil changes, and the belts/rollers/water pump being done 8k miles ago, this car is stock.

Some glitches I discovered on the way home:

Tach sometimes floats up and down while shifting
A/C is cool at night, but NOT during the day (leaking compressor perhaps?)
Warning buzzer doesnt work when you leave your key in or lights on (I hear a faint sound, like the buzzer needs batteries?)
Rear hatch opens via inside button, but lock just turns when you use the key
Interior dome light doesn't go on with door open...lens cracked

That's it so far. I have to order the tensioner, and get new tires pronto. The other stuff I'll get into when I sell my BMW.

The suspension feels tougher than on my 88, and the brakes are better (Brembo). But I am guessing since nothing was replaced, I will need motor mounts, and rotors eventually...and shocks. I figured for the price, it was a good deal.

Opening up my wallet and saying good-bye to the green!

Easy to spot because of the tiny ventilation holes in the housing for the sound to come out. It's probably going bad or there's a faulty connection somewhere.

NOTE: Do not take it apart! The connections to the bell will break and kill it completely.

Gong Relay!? You kidding me??

So, it's not fixable??

Selling the blue BMW...yup! I tell ya, after driving the 944 for 7 hours, getting into the BMW to go to the train station today was like getting into a soft pair of slippers! Quiet, semi-luxurious...

The S2 engine is sweet after 4k!! I only did that once or twice, fearing a tensioner failure, or a tire blow-out!

Andy:
Congrats!!!! The way to describe your car sounds like my car. Those issues you mention are features, not issues! Specifically:

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Exterior is near mint, interior excellent except for some bolster wear, and corner seams stitching on the seats undone.</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Mine too! I plan on swapping the seatbacks left to right to eliminate additional bolster wear on the one seatback.

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Tach sometimes floats up and down while shifting</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Mine too.

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Warning buzzer doesnt work when you leave your key in or lights on (I hear a faint sound, like the buzzer needs batteries?)</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">My buzzer works when it wants to work, which is rarely. When it does go off, it surprises me.

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Interior dome light doesn't go on with door open...lens cracked</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">If you want, you can replace it with the lens from the rear hatch. My driver's door button that activates the light thingy needs to be cleaned to fix my problem: you probably have the same issue.

So, will I have a new competitor in S7 at the autocrosses now!??!

Congrats and enjoy!
-Z.

Congrats Andy! Welcome back into the Porsche fold. The car looks beautiful. If all goes well and my wife doesn't kill me I may join you as an S2 owner very soon.

Thanks guys!

Z--Features, eh? Well, at least the tach thing isn't an expensive "you need a new guage cluster" type thing! And the leather issues...normal too? Rear hatch lens...excellent idea! S7 competitor--not likely. My wife is just WAITING to tell me how right she was if/when something on this car breaks. All I need is a spun rod, or something Auto-X related to prove her right! I'll see.

At 100k miles, are the fule injectors still good...or do they need work??

I just got my $2 back today. seems my rx7 money all but disappeared.

i have clean seats. the bolsters are mint. the only damage is the stitching by the front by one's calf. Another board member is interested in them, and as soon as i get the 12 way seats in i will contact him. if that falls through, and if you and Z want to split my set and then sell the two worn seats on ebay it might be a win win for all since we all live driving distance from one another. check my pictures below for condition. i think they were probably fixed up by the dealer that sold me the car.

Andy, so are you coming to the gathering in NH?

As for the injectors, if you really want to you could pull em and have em rebuilt (talk to RC engineering...I remember it wasn't TOO expensive). But they're probably fine. Run a bottle of techron through for good measure...

Congrats!

Techron...yeah, that's what I'll do. Not gonna drive to NH after my drive from VA last night! I WILL make the next NJ Rutt Hutt (or nicer place) meet! Hopefully it will be a little warmer than our Jan meeting!

Hey, think about it, I sold my 944, bought a BMW, then bought another 944, all between NJ get togethers! I need help!
