Ran car low on oil, what could be causing the 'clanking' noise?
Well, basically I had an oil leak and didn't know it and ran the car down to low on oil, and it started making a clicking/clanking noise.... We really came to believe it was the lifters, after taking the cam assembly off we found that 3 of the lifters middle was really easy to push in, and figured they were bad. Getting 8 new lifters and putting them back in my cam and re-starting the car, the noise was still there... At first a whole lot of clanking, then it stopped to sound like just one... Could there be something else, like a rod bearing or something making that noise? I got some bad luck with cars eh? Maybe it's bad karma... ;-)

It could be just about damn near anything inside the engine that moves. And some that don't.
I have a bad feeling about this.. Good luck...

alright... I have oil pressure now, above 5 bar, it's off the chart, yet the noise is still there, so I duno what it is. I guess I'ma take it somewhere, if it needs rebuilt how much money am I looking at labour wise? If I have to have it rebuilt, i'ma make it worthwhile though damnit and throw a turbo on there that's something fierce... ;-)

Having been where you are now. My advice is to not start the engine anymore until you discover the problem. If it is a rod bearing failure, everytime you start the car you are grinding away at your crank. Pull your magnetic oil plug and check for metal filings. If your oil comes out with metal flakes and filings, it is most likely a rod bearing.
When mine went, the clacking came from the piston slapping the head. Mine has been repaired and I am currently putting my motor back together. So far fairly painless if you don't count the money you spend.
Good luck!

Your problem sounds incredibly painful. That noise you are hearing is probably the #2 rod bearing. I had the privilege of owning a parts car with a bad motor that I tried to blow up. The ticking sound was a bad bearing that slowly turned into a clanking sound. Surprisingly it never let go before I parked it.
If your oil pressure is "pegged" you may have a restriction somewhere or your oil pressure sender is toast.
Either way it costs a few bucks, especially if you in the words of my mechanic "blow datt up".
Hey RB are you a UCR member?
Enjoy!

Rothmans,
Yes I am a UCR member. Before my P-car threw the rod bearing I was planning on doing several UCR events. The only one I got too was the drivers ed event in April. I had to take my Chev Blazer since the rod bearing went the week before the event. I still had fun though. Next year I will sign up again and hopefully I can go with my P-car
