Default new battery died, found short coming from #10 fuse

OK,
The car is an 85.5 944. I had noticed a few weeks ago that one of the fans was coming on when the key was switched on. I just had the battery go dead after the car sat for a few days and I pulled the negative wire from the battery to find if I had a dead short in it. I found that I had a short,(light on in my tester), until I pulled fuse #10. This fuse is supposed to run the #2 fan. When I put the fuse back in with the ignition on I can hear the relay clicking and the fan stays on. Any ideas what can be wrong with this?

Thanks,
Oscar

relay may be operating but the contacts may be welded together?

Sounds like the relay, especially if the fans are engaging with nothing more than the key on. You can pop the relay case open carefully and see if the contacts are stuck together. If they are sometimes you can pass some emery paper over both surfaces and see if it frees them up. If it keeps shorting a resistor is bad meaning the relay is toast and needs to be replaced. They aren't that expensive. If it's not blowing the fuse the current draw from the fan is fine and again points to a bad relay.

Ok, the relay seems to be OK. all of the contacts seem good. When I plug it in the back passenger side click's but doesn't do anything. When I plug in the #10 fulse the driverside rear coil click's and the fan comes on.

What else can I try?

Thanks,
Oscar

See if you can borrow a known good fan relay and try swapping it. If the fan still comes on your temp sensor at the side of the radiator could be bad and sending the wrong info to relay.
