I might be involved soon to a project where a Japan import 1989 944 2.7L automatic (21000 miles) will be converted to manual. Car feels practically new and that's the reason why the future owner would like to have it. He prefers manual transmisson and we have a donor car available.
I have read the WSM automatic chapter and several issues has been risen. At leaste these issues need some attention:

-Clutch fluid reservoir. Does automatic's brake mastercylinder have attachment point for clutch fluid hose
-Cluch/brake pedal set. Can automatic bigger brake pedal replace as a "bolt-on" method with clutch/brake pedals
-Tachometer change to one without autotrans systems.Original odometer must not touch, because car has so low KM's
-Speedometer function. Is automatics speedometer connected to the trans like manual cars are
-reversing lights, is automatic cars wired similar way like manual ones.
-DME, most likely the chip is the same as manual car have

Otherwise swap is just hard labour

You are LHD? For the RHD cars, the clutch fluid has a seperate reservior.

The tacho will swap out. I will be glad to buy yours as my PRND21 lights always blow out.

Ahh... Would like to ask you how much you would value a '91 LHD 944 S2 from Japan. I was offered one with slight comestic damage on left side. I was told mileage is 50k km but have not verified if odo is actually working. Not sure if has LSD.

I'll try take some pics.

How much should one offer for such car?

Any idea on price range for a Japanese 968?

Thanks!

Sprint.

Value of good japanese S2 is very flexible. All between few hundred to few thousend.
What comes to 968's they i know few examples which were sold to europe between 2K€-5K€.Most japanese 968's are tiptronics.

My first P, 924S (paid 2k) , was a automatic. I only had it for 2 months, then i bought immediately a manual 944. I saw no power difference between the 2. I would even say that the automatic had more torque

no offense, but anyone that wishes to suggest that 3 shift points will allow the engine to stay anywhere near the peak of the power curve (when desired) on a highway onramp, the twisties or anyplace else, or in peak economy (in the proper torque/hp range when desired) needs to re-think this..... the jump in performance with a 5 speed box is profound.... and it's the same reason the 968 comes with 6 short shift points and not just standard 5..... even an early 944 would benefit from having 6 speeds in similar fashion, provided they were at the proper ratios with 5 short gears and either the 5th or 6th gear allowing the car to reach top speed (drag limited at peak power) and always be able to find a near-perfect engine speed no matter what the moment called for.

ratio ........ speed @ 6000 rpm ........ speed @ 4500 rpm ........ speed @ 3000 rpm ........ increase (mph) from previous gear @ 3000 rpm

AAARGH Thread dig!

FWIW my LHD '94 968 6 spd ex-Japan with 63,000km was US$6,640 not including shipping. Once it was clear it was unable to be made road legal here in NZ I bought it sans wing mirrors, seats, door handles and rear hatch for US$4,980. Road legal and RHD, in our market it could have commanded USD$18-23,000
