Just suck it up and be happy with it if it is that nice. When I was offered the 89 I own, all I knew was someone was coming by with a 944 with 130k mi. they were looking to sell. I didn't know it was an automatic. Broke my heart a little bit, but I wanted a GT car and I said hey - 2.7L & no clutch jobs! I knew the car wasn't fast, but like the 928 guys say once you are going the car is quick. A 944 isn't meant to destroy anything off the line - its for twists and turns and the like. I have had my car for four years now and I love it more everyday. It handles so well, looks sexy, etc. I will eventually get another sports car that is a 5 speed but seriously doubt that I will ever sell this car. It really is a pleasure to own. People here dog auto anything, but your car is a late interior car as well. Give it some time before you decide to rip everything out for an MT swap. Just my opinion.

It's funny how people skip over the question. Yes you can swap in a 5 speed, for a LOT of money and time. But you're end up with a car that's only a little bit less slow.

If you want faster acceleration, sell the auto and pick up a turbo, or a 944S2. But if you have a pristine 944, you're a lucky guy and you should enjoy it. There are a lot of TIRED 944s out there, and they'll keep changing hands and sucking wallets dry until someone drives them into a bridge abutment.

I would think 968 Tip, matching TT, axles and control computer would be enough for the swap..
But yeah some $$

...or one of us non-parting idiots buys it and empties our wallet into it's cold, dark, water-stained interior.

I've done it, and personally I think it's only worth going from auto to manual if you enjoy working on the car.
If it's just going to **** you off to do the work, then don't.
The manual is a bit quieter though, I can actually hear the exhaust now instead of the auto tranny whirring around.

For what the parts cost, you would be at 60% the cost of 968.

Just enjoy it as is, and wave as the mini vans go flying by.

Did we forget that even with limited power the 944 5-speed is fun to drive? Not the least of which is due to a nice gearbox and linkage? A 944 auto is a travesty.... If you want a 'personal luxury' car there are much better choices... A 5-speed parts car can be had for not that much.. I think it would be a fun project. Don't settle for an auto!

I don't think so.

Here is a 968 Tip for $600, axles $50 each, and TT for $200.

Ebay Link

Find the Tiptronic computer, and you should be in business, all for a little more then $1k.

I wouldn't mind it at all. I love working on cars. I have been doing honda swaps for a while now. If I'm going to swap the tranny I would also get a bigger motor to go in it. like a 944s2 motor and transmission swap. Then maybe an LSD.

The 944 5-speed is travesty also. It's the worst part of the car. Its fun to drive IN SPITE of its cheap audiness.

My dad has an automatic. It is dog slow. Its much slower than my car. I have a 924s 5 speed. Granted my car has a chip and exhaust but it only ran a 15.7 before the chip. Its not a speed demon but its not bad once you are moving. I needed new suspension when I ran it at the track. Its all replaced now. The auto 944 though is a nice cruiser. I liked driving my dad's car when I was able to. It handles awesome. I would like one as a daily driver maybe. Just drive it for a while then eventually get a 5 speed or an S2. I would love to have an S2 but not in my near future.
