When I went to the Seattle dyno day back in February, I don't think there was a single 944/951 with a front plate. I did notice that the 930 of the shop owner had a front plate, but on this car the plate is very low and there are no air inlets to block.

I've got the black crest plate on mine, just because the car already came with the front bracket installed. I just orderd a replacement from Pelican for 16.00, because the existing one was creased along both sides(from high-speed runs) and then the top got bent to hell from my knees hitting it while working on the car--D'oh.

I am also from Canada, but it is NOT illegal to drive without one where I live (must be a Maritime Provinces thing).
.....so, needless to say, I don't have one. But a friend who works at AutoPort (a place here in Nova scotia that most of the cars you all drive came thru - can you say 50 Football fields full of cars!!) got me a nice German plate. It's very thin, so it is about the same size as the bumper from top to bottom. Problem is that it is about 1 inch on each side too long. It needs to be jammed under the bumperettes to make it fit. I'm still thinking of putting it on though - it's kinda cool looking. The numbers are in Red (my 944 is Red) and the letters are in yellow - so it's not a boring plate - plus it has German writing on it - so it matches the car.

As mentioned, it is required that a state tag be displayed on the front of any vehicle in Ohio. When I moved here 5.5 years ago my car (at the time a Scirocco 16V) had no provision for a front tag, so I obviously left it off. One evening (within 3 months of moving here) I returned to my car to find a parking ticket, and a ticket for not diplaying a tag on the front of my car.
On the other hand, my brother-in-law, who has lived here most of his life, has never displayed a front tag and has never been ticketed for this. This is despite that fact that he gets stopped all of the time for speeding (not sure how he still has a drivers license)

The way I got my German plates on was by bending the hell out of the US bracket with a pair of pliers. I used a pair of bolts on each side behind the top of the plate to make it fit straight (the bottom sticks out more). It sits flush with the front of the black bumpers.

I don't understand this. Why would you put a plate on the front of a 951 unless you absolutely had to. The plate messes up the front airflow and styling. If the two little screwholes bug you, just go to <a href="http://bumperplugs.com," target="_blank">http://bumperplugs.com,</a> just make sure you don't get confused when you type bumper or you may be in for a shock!
I was in Phoenix a few months ago where they are not required to have front plates. There were all sorts of cars that had poor factory front plate provisions, yet they still had some sort of Airzona state flag or marquee badge. I think the Porsche badge on my nose panel does a good enough job of saying what kind of car it is.

front plates req'd in WA, but i haven't run one on any car in 15 years. two tickets in that time, good odds i figure. i just pay 'em.
technically, the 928 doesn't have front plate mounts, though a PO drilled it and screwed the plate right to it. i'm just going to over-size the holes and buy some Bumper Plugs...

I got pulled over by a Whidbey Island cop in February for it. He had absolutely no other reason to pull me over, and I even offered to install the front license plate on the spot. $85.
So, I paid the fine and it stayed off the car in the name of airflow and vanity. In California, I think a fix-it ticket is about the worst you would get.
