What year is the climate control unit in your car? If you have the climate control unit from at least a 1991 or later 944/968 the buttons ARE NOT soldered into the unit. The entire button assembly can be pried out and replaced. Porsche sells the button for ~$50. Even if you don't have a late climate control unit you can fix the button but it is much more involved. You have to completely disassemble the unit. Black case has to come off, all the ***** and slider buttons and the plastic face plate. Then you need a good solder gun with a very pointy tip and some method of removing the old solder. The soldering has to be done VERY carefully or you could short some of the solder connections and the unit will not function properly even with the new switch.
The other option is to buy a good used unit and put your recirc and defrost buttons in the new/used unit. I have two units for sale in the classifieds and both units function 4.0
Look at the ads and click on the pics to get a true idea of what they look like.
If you're interested let me know.

Yes, the snowflake switch can be replaced. Mine required soldering. I know Parts Heaven sells just the switch. If you need more info, email me offline...I saved all the posts regarding this repair.
