Post OT: Die Cast Models

OK, anybody else collect these things besides me? Ive got 100 or so 1/18th scale ones and wanted to know if anyone has a secret web site they know of where they are dirt cheap. I usually scour the shelves at Toys R Us or KB for ones that are marked down, but Ive been looking at <a href="http://www.die-cast-models.com" target="_blank">www.die-cast-models.com</a> among a couple other sites.

Im thinking of buying a couple of those higher-end models in 1/18 -- the $40-50 ones, many of which are F1 race cars. Anyone care to comment on their quality and if they are worth the premium over the standard Bburrago, Maisto, etc, group.

Maybe we need to have a picture post of our die-casts. Uhh, that is, unless Im the only dork.

Na, you're not the only dork: I've got about 30 1/18th scale, 12 1/24th scale, and 50 or so Hot Wheels cars: mostly Porsches and Mercedes models.
Talk about being a dork: I have them listed in an Excel spreadsheet sorted by model, make, scale...etc.

My favorite model that I own: Tie: The Carrera GT Prototype car, and the 356 No.1.

My holy grail (wanting to buy but haven't yet) : The 1/18th 904 in red.

I have ordered a lot from <a href="http://www.exoticar.com." target="_blank">www.exoticar.com.</a> Decent prices, great service, nice selection.

I like to collect 1/18 die cast exotics, I wish someone made a 944 Turbo!

I usually get mine thru <a href="http://www.wildcollections.com" target="_blank">Wild Collections</a>

I have a Matchbox 944 Turbo (White). Part of the Premium Collection: World Class Series 19: Supercars (2 of 6).

I also have the Red 924Turbo race car (Boss #25) made by Burago in 1/24 scale.

Those are the only two 924/944/968 series cars that I have. I know Porsche made a couple models when the cars were out, but try and find one!

There are no current 1/18 scale models of our cars, but recently, they made a 1/24 scale model of the 928: hopefully, the 924/944/968 is next!

Majorette at one time made a model of the 944 turbo, and of the S2 cab. Sometimes they pop up on e-bay, but they aren't very common. The ones that I have are 1/24 scale. The turbo is a white one with phone dials, and what looks like a euro rear bumper. The S2 is a red model, but I don't own one of those.

Decent quality, not spectacular, but definitely better than some out there.
My current favorite is my 911 Carrera 4S from Maisto. Great looking model, very detailed. Labeled as a Special Edition, and cost about $25 at Wal-Mart.

Good Luck!

yep yep this topic comes up every now and again on the boards (search the previous posts for some cool pics)

i found the post where i posted an image of my 100+ 1/18 scale die-cast models

<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=15&t=003211" target="_blank">check it out</a>

i only collect models from 1980 and onwards.. but basically thats the only criteria i have.
so you're not the only one out there with this obsession! although.. lately i havent been getting any new ones.. the p-car has eaten away all my funds

oh yea and about 944 models, as mentioned.. the biggest die-cast models around are the 1/24 scale. bburago or maisto need to get off their asses and make some 1/18 scale 944s! what the hell.. water-coolers always gettin' the short end of the stick!

oh well. post some pics of your collection!
die-cast models rule <img src="graemlins/a_smil17.gif" border="0" alt="[blabla]" />

<img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

oh yea -about the quality of autoart ($50 models) and other such brands.. i have a few of these.. and although the detail is nice, there is a noticeable difference in build quality. honestly.. their rubber tires arent as rubbery.. their wheels dont spin as freely, and they dont have that cool independant spring suspesion that the maisto models have. but.. for the models they make that other companies dont - like the lexus' and ford crown victoria and stuff like that - its worth getting. most of my models are maisto, bburago though.

and yea - kbtoys and toysrus are the cheapest places youll find for these, they just have a terrible selection usually.. oh well.. its fun scouring isnt it?

Glad Im not the only one with this obsession. Thanks guys. I'll take a pic of my stash tonight and post.

Ive got that 1/24 red 924 Turbo from Bburago. Ive had it for nearly 15-20 years. I was a small tyke and just bought it at a hobby store b/c I thought it was neat. I paid $5.75 for it. Dont ask me how I remember that. The craftsmanship on it is pretty sad, but I'll take a pic of it nonetheless.

Operator, you are hard core. Dont even take em out of the box.

I try to stay with 1:43 scale but do have a few 1:18.

Here is an additional site:

<a href="http://www.minicastcars.com" target="_blank">http://www.minicastcars.com</a>

I will post a picture of my cars when I get home. Most are the Porsche sets sold at the dealer. Others are very inexpensive findings in Amazon.com. I bought 5 Ferrari 1:43 scale models for like US$3-5.00 each... good quality/level of detail.

well.. i used to take them out of the box.. but then when we moved i packed them all back away into the original boxes.. and just stacked them up. they get dusty out of the box anyway still.. it would be nice to take them out and play with them.. heh. i have some 911s on my desk that arent in the box.

oh yea and speaking of porsche lust and models starting it, there was a thread about this too (well on origin of porsche lust).<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=15&t=003783&p=" target="_blank">heres the thread</a>
in my post i discussed how a matchbox 928 started it all for me.. see.. model cars are important!

Yes indeed, I too have a bunch! Mostly 1/43rd. I have a couple of the german NZG 1/43rd 944's, a 911, 928 and a bunch of others.

But I still have my pride and joy: an original Schuco wind-up 356! I still remember my Dad buying it for me in 1959 at a hobby store in Hicksville New York. Baby blue with a cream roof. Still winds up and goes like hell!!
