And what is the point or purpose of doing all this fabrication..? Were you just trying to adjust the location of the lower ball joint..? Make a wider wheelbase..? I mean dont get me wrong its cool to say hey i did all this stuff but is it really worthwhile..? Wouldnt have been easier to machine a part that is just like the ball joint but offsets it out ward, something that presses into the stock control arm or an adapter that bolts onto the stock ball joint..?

no because the ball joint on the 944 stock arms are cr** and if you pu an adpter on there then you are screwed if the ball breaks or wears out, so this is a simple solution because you can change the ball joint and never take off the arm to replace it.

I have an 85.5 with a Chevy 5.3l v8. The control arms on these cars are shoddy. I have owned 6 of these cars over the years and hate the ball joint repair job. The ball joint pockets are questionable. I have seen a few bust out through the top even. Also, do a search for broken control arms and big sway bars. I will be sticking on a custom 31.5mm hollow-tube to mine with no worries.
I also will be installing Late spindles on Early struts in the next 2 weeks and have the control arms set for the late offset so I don't have to add 1" spacers to my Turbo twist II wheels that I have.......all this while subtracting 5mm on the late mounting holes to take into account the 5mm added by doing the Lexus 4-pot monoblock calipers and Boxster S rotors swap to the Late spindles, unnecessary, but I'm OCD.....
Try doing that with stock parts

Final Details
I took off the Early Spindle/Hubs that I had cryoed and installed a set of hub/spindles from an 87-S to test my modded RX-7 arms with 944 geometry and recent mod of taking an Early 944 strut and properly modding it to fit LATE spindles. After moving over the 2 control arm adapter bolt holes for the late offset, I used the same Boxster S rotors and Lexus calipers and I confirmed that after you add the billet rotor centering rings, you can simply put 3/16" washer shims between the LS430 caliper brackets and the 944 LATE spindle tabs. Everything Fits like a glove....

The Correct Way...Late Spindles on Early Struts
This is the proper way to convert an Early strut to accept Late spindles and retain correct geometry....
First disassemble the Early strut and set the end up on a mill and cut the edge perpendicular to the strut housing right at the lower stationary bolt hole edge...I measured 3 different ones at 1.81"
Mill out some adapters with that 1.81" Dimension and that convert from the 20mm spindle mount width to the new 18mm width for the late spindles. The new spreadwidth Centers are now 63mm and this is even a stronger design....
I machined mine to fit perfectly in the slotted camber hole of the Early strut out ter clamp so there is no shoddy upper hole modding to do.....
Make sure everything fits before crackin' ot the welder....check
Weld along side the 1.81" Dimension and sides, and then the top and bottom just like the factory did. This will be even stronger than the way the German guy did it....
Don't half-*** it, put some pretty paint back on there...
Works like a charm.....The Main Point of the story is they rebuild with the simple inserts and Early Koni inserts just using the screw cap

944-Rx7 Control arm Sway links
These sway links allow all the stock 944 Swaybar hardware to remain untouched. I simply threaded 944 sway links all the way to their bases and drilled and tapped the sway adapters M10 x 1.5
A simple and preload adjusting sway link......
BTW....Does anyone make Polyurethane sway link bushings for this car? Gotta get me a set

Clearance
I took a pic with the bump steer tie-rod removed to show how much clearance there is between the 944 strut and modded control arm...This is at maximum extension with a load of room to spare.....

Someone knows this info. The Brembo Cat. lists the 87-up Turbo rear rotors with a 100mm offset. I have seen pics of the 86T rear rotors and they are shorter hat offset......Anyone know ?

old thread I know... lots of talk about late spindles and early control arms... is it possible to use early spindles and late control arms? FYI I am fitting Xschop's billet hub to my 85.5 spindle (with 968 M030 calipers and Cayenne rotors) and have camber plates to help correct for the excessive camber this would create normally... and I probably want to end up around 3 degrees negative camber anyway. As for why, I was planning on running my current setup for a couple of years due to budgetary restrictions and eventually upgrading everything to late down the road. If there was a chance to use the late high strung arms with the longer pins in the mean time I might consider it. Means I could jump straight to late offset wheels as well.
