Question Boxter snobs??

Just wondering if anyone else comes to this conclusion. Every time I see a Boxter on the road, and I look to give a wave or at least make eye contact with the driver, I find that 99% of them ignore me completely.

I figure they are either snobs, or, leasers that are not real Porsche people...you know?

Bahhhhh!!

They're likely leasers / posers / self-imagers who don't even _know_ that your car is another Porsche product...

Or maybe they're just jealous of the difference in price...

Jim, "Oh, is that the Boxster that they ship the 911 in?"

I think most Boxter owners are people who've never looked seriously at a Porsche before. All of the sudden, here's a Porsche convertible with a factory warranty that's in a lower price bracket and bongo.

Ah, whatever, I'd rather have a Z3.

Z3 - ugs

Boxster drivers - yea.. most of them wouldn't know another Porsche if it hit them in the nose... I don't even bother waving. I look at them/their car as they drive by just to see if they do the same - they don't. Just peoples who want to say they drive a Porsche (kinda like us except we actually care about the other things too - history, performance, styling, upkeep, etc). There are sooo many Boxsters' here in south-western CT too... yeesh

I agree with all of you (although I never saw a woman in a Boxter...usually yuppy young guys, or, mid-40's dudes)!

On a side note, I took the 44 to Home Depot yesterday, and parked in the way-back of the lot to avoid the carts and SUV's. Funny thing is, when I returned to my car an hour later, there were 2 sweet 911's parked right near my car...so real Porsche people stick together! My wife's comment: "Look, they're kissing"!

I rather like the Boxsters, just not the typical owners. As far as the current crop of roadsters go, I like the Boxster the best. That may be my next Porsche(when I've enjoyed this one for at least 5 years..my other vehicle will be purchased by then and I'll need another payment for a deduction).

Of the many I've seen on the highway I think 'ONE' actually waved as if he knew I was in another Porsche. The rest either knowingly ignored me or hadn't a clue. Sad.

On a positive note though normally we 9** owners are a lot more friendly lot! 8^)

I did have one Boxster actually park next me in one of those out of the way areas and you know I thought the interior of my 944 is a hell of a lot nicer than the bland black interior in that Boxster!! I wonder if he (or she) felt the same!

8^)

I think many of the issues you describe apply not to just Boxster owners, but a lot of the owners of new Porsches in general. You would be surprised at how many housewives are tooling around in Tiptronic 996 TT's!

USA Today recently ran a story on "fun car" demographics, according to JD Power and Associates.

Boxster Owners
Average age: 43.
Married: 68%
Male: 83%.
Average household income: $196k.

The only car with a higher Male % was the Corvette with 86% male ownership.

I guess from these demographics one might draw the conslusion that the Boxster is a "mid-life crisis" car.

I often see people driving their new Porsches who have no idea about the history of the marque. They will soon move on to the new Lexus or whatever the flavor of the moment may be. That's okay - it just leaves more ripe pre-owned pickings for Porsche purists.

I would also point out that the REAL Porsche snobs are the ones who yap incessantly about "REAL" Porsches - which by their definition must include a rear-mounted air-cooled engine.

The Boxster is destinined to be a classic car. The formula is simple and sweet: two seats, one flat-six engine, and a drop top. Tough combination to beat!

There's only one Boxster (that I know of) in my town. I was out cruising in the 944 on Saturday, and I saw from a distance a silver Boxster coming at me. The guy was already waving almost a block away. I was shocked! That kind of made my day. After all, it's been about two years since I've seen another Porsche while I'm out cruising around in mine. Thumbs up for this Boxster owner!

Yeah- I don't like the Boxster interior AT ALL-I'd take a 951 or 968, even an early '70's 911 over the Boxster ANY DAY- actually, the 996's are starting to look kind of Boxsterish inside too-

MY favorite roadster- I don't like roadster's really- they have a certain FEEL to them- I'd rather have a real car in convertible form, if that makes sense. So far though, I do like the Lexus convertible- I haven't ridden in one yet though. I also like Audi TT's (Audi's have the best interiors hands down) but they're a little slow. I do KIND of like the MR2- MUCH better than the Miata for budget terror. I'm not much of a Z3 fan though- I'd much rather take an E36 M3 convertible than a Z3- OR, how about a 968 or 944S2 cab

Oh well, I've babbled too long...

Porsche is going cheap on all 986 & 996 interiors. To bring the interior up to snuff you have to order a bevy of ridiculously overpriced options (full leather, aluminum package, etc.). Of course, most people bite the bullet and order those options - which is why Porsche is the most profitable car company in the world.

The 986 & 996 interiors are remarkably similar. Compare the base 986 interior to that of the 996 Turbo - the similarities are shocking. It's all due to the bean-counters who presently preside at Porsche!

That's because for the 986/996 cars Porsche had some Japanese consultants come in and tell them how to cut production costs.

I think I read somewhere that the 996 Turbo costs something like 40% less to build than the 993 Turbo? But they still sell for the same/slightly higher prices...I like the new Porsches a lot but I do agree that the Boxter and 996 Turbo interior really can't touch the interior of my dad's 993 Turbo..

Well, luckily, I have had better experiences than the rest of you as far as the Boxster/Boxster owners are concerned. I really like driving the Boxster. The base is a little underpowered, but the S is a good car (and has Big Reds to boot). As far as owners go, most if not all of the Boxster people I have met in town are enthusiasts. It helps if you are in the PCA, then basically everyone you meet is very friendly and has a good attitude.

I hope you all find better examples of a Porsche owner.

And little do they know that much of the 944 and 968 line of cars (Turbo, S2, and 968) has almost, if not more, power than the Boxster!!

The "base" Boxster has a 2.7 liter for 217 hp. I love the fact that my twelve year old S2 has just about the same power (and it will have the same, if not more, once I install the Steve R. chip... which will be soon) as one of Porsche's newest models.

To me, that truly shows how advanced and "special" these cars were back when they were introduced... if they can still hold their own against recent models twelve years later!!
