A tenstion gauge is the right way to know that. But from what you did, it looks fine. Hard to tell. If you twist it in the middle of the long span on the top, how far does it go? Almost 180 degrees?

My Car "Barfed" Coolant a couple years a ago. It scared the heck out of me when it happened. There was a huge puddle on the garage floor. Of course it happened at like 11:30pm.
The next morning when I checked everything the car seemed fine. When I talked to my mechanic about it he told me the car probably had too much coolant in it. He said that 944s like to sit at the minimum mark on the tank. (So my advise is do not do too much topping up on the coolant int hese cars unless you want to be doing a lot of cleaning up)
If you have any more then that in the system it will eventually "Barf" out the rest to get the level to where it likes it.
