Post Water pump shot = good time to rebuild!!!

So,

I took my car in today to get the balance shaft adjusted because I spun the old tensioner on it.

I called my mechanic back and he said that I need to come and see the car... It isn't good. He said that he can hear the bearings in my water pump when he spins it by hand, the front main seal is leaking (which I knew), the oil cooler seal is dripping a bit (which I thought was some blowover from the front main seal).

He said that he could fix all of that plus a good tune-up for about 1300€. I said I would call him back.

In moments I will make one of the largest parts purchase that I have ever made...

...by the end of next week, my engine will have been in and out of my car and a freshly rebuilt engine. By Mike and myself. Thank you.

That is all.

BTW - I will try to be thorough and take lots of pics.

Huh, $200 waterpump = $3000 rebuild?

I hope there was more wrong with it than needing a pump, roller, and oil leasks addressed. Good luck anyway.

Why are you surprised? <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" /> For those of us that bought our car used (one-two or more PO) I think we are all eager to get our car's engine rebuild to have that sense of security during our ownership.

My rear engine seal replacement turned into something similar… I still have that bug in the back of my head telling me to pull the engine out and rebuild it… but my wallet keeps telling me to just fix was is broken and get it back on the road.

OHHHHH believe me when I tell you I know the "just pull it to be sure" bug has bitten me several times.

I had a bad rear main, bad suspension, bad clutch, bad turbo, and leaky valve guides when I decided for a top end rebuild. All that had to come off anyway, so it made sense.

Having a bad waterpump and an oil leak here and there would not be enough for me to do a full rebuild.

Jaime hit the nail on the head. I am tired of fixing little things here and there.

And BTW Perry, I can get it for a little cheaper than $3000. You can buy a rebuilt engine, get it installed, for 3000€ from our mechanic. That is labor and everything, and he charges 80€ an hour!!

However, Mike and I will do it ourselves, as usual.

J/K, just giving you guys a hard time. Once again, wish us luck.

With the water pump, oil cooler seals and front main seal leaking of course it could be fixed a little easier. Jon and I are both the same in we like tinkering with our cars. We are both eager to learn and get the experience of the rebuild. Jon's car has around 148k miles therefore he is also concerned about rod bearings, even more so since our trip to the Nurburgring. I am planning to do the same to my engine this winter. We both want to be able to drive the Ring often and hard without worrying about that dreaded spun rod bearing.

"Do it the easy way, what fun is that?"
