Post Clutch Master Cylinder or Slave?

I posted a question a couple days ago about my clutch. I went in the garage to pull my car out after it sat in for about a 3 days, and when i pressed the clutch, the pedal just stayed down. I peeked underneath and noticed it was leaking fluid. A few ppl on this board advised me that it was most likely the clutch slave cylinder. I looked on my PET cd and couldnt find a Slave cylinder but did find the master. What is the difference? Well anyways i took it out and im not sure how to tell if this is the culprit. I also visually inspected the hose that comes down from the reservoir and it seems like its in good condition. Here is a picture of the PET diagram of the part that i took out. Should i order the hoses too or not? And about how much do you think these items will cost? Any other advice?

The slave is under the car, right above the starter. Usually, the master leaks into the car and the slave leaks under the car. Either way, it is known that after replacing one, the other goes out as well. So you might as well replace both. Jack up the car and look for the starter in the center underneath the tranny. Remove the started and you will have access to the slave.

HTH!

Sajid,
Get the hose as well as the cylinder. Trust me.
I believe the hose it a little pricey (~$50-$60), but it has probably never been replaced, which would make it susceptible to failure at some point. No sense doing it twice.

IMHO,

Replace BOTH the salve and the master. The other will fail within a few months.

I wouldn't bother replacing the blue hose that runs from the brake fluid resivour to the master cylinder. I purchased 1 yard of it for ~$20. You only need about 18 inches.

I second getting the hose between the master and the slave cylinders (#22).

I totaled mine trying to get it off when I replaced my master and slave.

The picture of the hose that runs to the clutch slave cylinder is incorrect. On my '86 951 it is all metal, therefore not really succeptible to age related issues like rubber is. I would however replace the line that runs from the reservoir to the clutch master cylinder. This should be available in bulk from Paragon, a Porsche dealer, or likely even a VW/Audi dealer.
