I posted about this on the Turbo board, I thought I'd mention it to everyone else...
I bought a Turbo in the bay area, and I'm thinking about driving it back up to Seattle. Everyone I've talked to (except the girlfriend, but we already went over that before ) says I should drive it back, instead of having it hauled up. So I'm pretty much set on doing that.
Does anyone have any advice for driving a car 850 miles that I've just purchased? I'm not sure how to handle insurance, I suppose I should call them and tell them what's going on. Also, if I have a signed california title, and I happen to get pulled over for something (god knows I won't be speeding! ) am I going to be hassled to death because of that?
I'm planning on bringing some basic tools, plus buying some oil, duct tape, water, etc. just in case. Also bringing
the Valentine One, for sure!
I'm a little worried about the passes too. The rear tires are 275/40r17s, on 10.5x17" wheels. Not exactly the best if it starts to snow at all. I don't suppose anyone really makes chains for wheels that big.
If there's anyone along the SF-Seatle route that wants to say hi, let me know. I'm not sure how much time I'll have down in the actual bay, I have a few people I'm meeting for sure, and I'm going to try to get out of there on a saturday afternoon, and then stay somewhere that night. Then spend Sunday driving up the rest of the way. But if there's anyone in sacramento, northern cali, OR, or southern WA not too far off of I5, I'd love to say hi. (or crash on your couch one night! )

I've never driven the entire way from the bay to oregon on the PCH, how is the road once it gets past Eureka? Is there any reason that I would ever have to go over to I5?

Where in the bay area did you buy the car from? Which City? I'm in the south bay Santa Clara/San Jose area. When are you coming? I did just the opposite when I bought my 951. I flew to Seattle and drove the car back 850 miles. It rained all the way back too. Send me an e-mail (Cas951@aol.com)

Hey man, good luck with the new ride and your trek back home.
I purchased my car from Utah and drove it straight across the Utah/Nevada high-deserts and Sierras to get the new red bad boy home here in Santa Cruz. Broke it into two legs with a stay over in Reno.
I took a few steps before the drive just for personal peace of mind. I flew with basic tools and parts. My pre-flight check consisted of:
* Replaced cap/rotor/wires/plugs/air filter at the SLC airport with new items, carried these and some basic hand tools in a checked bag.
* The oil had been changed just before the purchase, so that was ready to go.
* checked oil level/coolant level/power steering/brake/clutch fluid levels
* Checked tire pressure and tires for any punctures or cracks.
* Checked wheel lugs for tightness.
* Tightened a few loose nuts on the headers.
* Double-checked coolant hoses to be sure they looked sound enough for the drive.
* Double checked hose clamps.
* Double checked visible electrical connectors.
* Double checked vaccum lines for tight fit.
* Carried extra fuses in a variety of sizes.

If something were to happen, you'd have a few options instead of getting it towed to the nearest place off the highway. The Porsche website has a dealer locator by state as a start. BTW, you *did* get a ppi right? That should help put your mind at ease. HTH
