Post Who has used a Garrett ball bearing turbo... and how has your reliability been?

Mine has blown a seal after approximately 3500 miles.

If you have one of these turbos, installed, I would like to know how your reliability has been and how many miles you've got on the turbo.

Again... this is for either Garrett conventional bearing turbos OR Garrett ball bearing turbos.

Thanks

how did you know when your seals blew? DId it ever smoke at idle, or just under boost?

Just got my Garrett BB turbo from SFR. I am very happy with it. I only have 500 miles on it so far though.

I've got one of those Huntley Stg.2 ball-bearing turbos too. Since all the identifying marks have been filed & ground off, forensics analysis leads me to believe that it's a K26/8 turbine and a Garrett TO4x-variety compressor with single ball-bearing. It's been working fine for three years. And I bought it used, so it's even older than that.

One thing I've noticed with some aftermarket turbo installations is that it's easy to kink & twist the turbo oil-return line underneath the motor mount. This will prevent the turbo from getting adequate lubrication.

Although seals failing may be more to do with heat. Don't disconnect the turbo water-pump. For a weight penalty of 2-lbs, I think the peace of mind and longevity's worth it.

Yeah, Bill just needs twenty more runs down his test road and it will be completely broken in.

When I did my rebuild last winter the one thing that struck me was how small the hole was in the gasket from the oil feed line on the balance shaft to the turbo. Compared to the new gasket the hole in the old one was tiny! It looked like it had swollen a bunch. Didn't look like a good thing for turbo longevity on any turbo.

If I were putting on a new turbo and that gasket hadn't been changed in a while I'd put a new one in to be safe.

As far as short lived turbos go I had a Holeset on my 94 3.6 last all of 800 miles. Absolutely nothing till 4k and then you got a 2x4 in the backside

This turbo 60-1 HiFi in a T-04 with a 8 hot side makes full boost at about 3500 rpms.

The boost hits so hard that first gear is totally useless. When the boost hits in second gear, the car breaks the tires loose and tries to go sideways again. Dangerous. It hits too hard for the 245's. Violent.

Also... It looks like I'm going to have to get this turbo rebuilt, but I don't want to wait for the time it takes to rebuild it.

So I'm probably going to buy another turbo and sell this turbo after it's been rebuilt.

This same turbo made 406HP to the wheels, SAE corrected on a Dynojet. I've not dynoed my car with this turbo (2.5L), but it's fast. Real fast.

If you're interested in this turbo let me know. I'm probably going to sell it (again, after it's been rebuilt by Turbonetics).

It's water cooled, oil lubricated BTW. A direct bolt on to a stock car.
