in the new 911 and Porsche world there is a story about a 964 with drilled holes in his air intake box.

he simply puts that it is a pointless thing to do yet it makes the car have such a neat sound during wide open throttle.

so should i take off the top of my airbox and drill holes in it to give it the sound the guy with the 964 was talking about or is this completely stupid?

Our water cooled engines sound a LOT different than an air cooled 964's engine does. I swapped my airbox out for a K&N cone type, and I like the sound more, but I don't know about drilling holes in it. How big are the holes you are thinking about drilling? Might be worth your while to just throw a cone filter on there (although some here may argue that point).

or just cut the top of the airbox off.

I know skip has done this, and a couple other people. I did it a few weeks ago just for the helluvit, and it sounds quite a lot different. I think I like it so far.

As far as being able to breathe easier, and getting an extra 1HP or something, I'm not going to make any claims, my butt can't feel the difference.

if you cut around the lip of the top part, it makes a nice clean cut and you can bolt the frame back on to hold the filter in place.

I would think all of the hot air coming off of the intercooler would hurt performance. Anyone who's drilled the air box noticed this?

the cone filters (or cutting the top off your air box) both just suck in warm air off your engine. if anything get a cone filter and figure out a way to move it somewhere that it actually gets cool air (for example when i get the money i want to get the vented nose and moving my cone between the headlights, should suck in more cool outside air then)

I drilled holes in the top of my airbox. I basically took a 2" hole saw, traced the out the circles, but it on my drill and went to town. I also cut off the arm that extends down into the fender well. You can really hear the difference.

As to performance, I didn't see much gain, but throttle response was a little better.

I have holes drilled in my airbox. I can hear the difference at WOT but I don't feel any difference. My holes are smaller than what I have seen previously done before and I would like to cut them smaller eventually.

Yup, I did it - for better or worse... truly, I can't see that it matters enough to worry about either way. A true cold-air intake is the only real way to any significant change... still working on that one - aren't we all

skip, what did you do with the hose that cools the belts or whatever it does... the little one on the left side. alternate routing for it or you just left it out completely?

That hose should be capped off at the belt housing inlet - per Porsche TSB issued many years ago (in the archives here). Many folks vent the hose using a small K&N crankcase breather - seems smart. Mine is simply capped off.

it doesnt sound like a honda with a cold air intake does it? i hope not...

Yup, the very same - makes a deep whoooooooooop sound when you're deep in the go pedal. If you want a taste of it, just remove the fresh air snorkel from the airbox - nearly the same effect.

doesn anyone have an extra air box for an '86 NA? i was thinking of doing the holes or something like that....but I'd like to be able to switch back to OE setup if i dont like it. thnx
