While it sounds like a FUN project. I don't have the time to do it. With two kids, 12 hour a day job and weekend filled up until August.

Funny thing is i don't have the dough or the time. HA!
I could always charge it, but for what. Its a car i drive 3-4 week s year, i can't justify getting it done until i have the funds.

Besides, my mechanic said the car might need some machine work. I don't have the experience to tell if anything else would be needed to be done.

I would assume the timming belt would need to be taken off. I don't have any expereince there either.

thanks for your input, i appreicate it.

Well after talking to a few friend and another mechanic. I have decided to try and replace the HG myself.

My main area of concerns is the gas lines, HG and timing belt being re-installed correctly.

I am trying to read up on the install of the HG. A few friends said they would stop by and ensure the timing belt was done correctly.

I would estimate it will take me a month or a few vacation days.

Now i need to figure out how i am going to get the car in the garage after its dropped off by AAA!

I need to purchase a tow hook and pull it up my drive way hill.

Hi,
I would check the turbo. My buddy blew the seal on his turbo, and had the except same problem. Headgasket was ok, it was just the turbo overheating and burning off coolant.

the gas lines in this car are easy, Disconnect the battery and then disconnect the gas lines. i tapped mine up so they wouldn't get stuff inside them.

If this car has a auto tensioner then its a piece of cake too change the belts. just set the car to TDC before starting any work on the engine. then when your done the bottom end will still be TDC

if you look behind the intake manifold onto the bell housing right next to where the speed and reference sensor is. you can look through the peep hole and see the fly wheel. when you manually crank the car over it will spin the flywheel and you line up the marking on the fly wheel with the marking on the bell housing. Also when you look through the cam tower timing belt guard the cam wheel should have a grove in it that lines up with the marking on the cam tower.

Here is a typical kit.

From the top you have the cam tower, head gasket, cam tower seals, 6 washers? (not sure about these), valve stem seals, water neck gaskets, gasket for the outlet to the heater valve, crush rings (don't remember these in the previous kits), exhaust gaskets and intake gaskets.

for sure you'll need the HG, the cam gasket. if you can get the intake manifold gasket as one big piece, do that. i found it very difficult to keep all 4 gaskets lined up while i tried to bolt the thing down. also, the water neck gasket may be necessary, also--mine was fine as is. there should be no need to take the exhaust headers off the head so you can save on those gaskets. the other cam tower re-seal stuff is optional but a good idea. if youre looking to save money, just get the HG, the Cam tower, the intake manifold gaskets, and possibly the water neck gasket. use that link i posted earlier and it will be a huge help.

i find tdc first by the cam sprocket, then i check under the car on the bell housing and there's a notch at the very bottom that you will see lined up with a notch on the flywheel.

there should be no reason to take the balance shaft belt off, and since its friggin hard to line it back up with tdc when tightening it, i would strongly suggest not taking it off. in fact, i dont even take off the A/C or P/S belts when working on the head/cam.

its really not that difficult to perform this job. if continue to have questions, continue to ask. this site is awesome and we will help you.

My goal was to figure out whats in the Gasket kits.
I was trying to compare whats in a HG kit versus the Part list i pasted below. I did not want to double purchase and or wanted to save on getting a kit versus purchasing each item at a single price.

I called a Porsche dealer for a price check on all the parts except the wide fire gasket. He qouted me $450 bucks, i was speach less. I checked pelican for every single priced part excluding the wide fire gasket. $221 bucks shipped. WOW what a difference.

87944turbo, where did you get the picture of the HG kit? Pelican?

Again, thanks everyone.

you could just work on it like an hour a week or whatever time you can set.

I'm guessing for an inexperienced person working slowly it won't take you more than 10 hours of work to replace the headgasket.

I'm not too familiar with 951s but on a 944 it's pretty straighforward. with a 951 you likely have more things to remove.

just label everything and put them in baggies so later you can easily put it all back together.

headgasket is not the worst job on a 944. clutch jobs are so much worse.

when my clutch and torque tube went in my car the car was on stands for like 3months and I set a like 2 hours to work on it a week to slowly take things apart at least it's not your only car so you don't have to be in a hurry to fix it.

Ok.....my car is now home, returned from my mechanic shop....almost 1 month, waiting for a p/u. It sure was a job getting the car in the garage with my driveways incline. I plan to begin the HG repair next Thursday and Friday. I hope things goes smoothly. I am sure it will take more than a couple of days. I'll try to post some pictures if time permits.
