Post My car sounds like a fart can.

Last week my car started sounding like a riced out Honda when it first starts up. Only in 1st and 2nd under a little bit of a load, start just before 3000 rpm.

After it warms up it starts to sound fine, even when I give it some gas.

The sound seems as if it is coming from the engine bay and not the muffler. At first I thought maybe I just had a leaf or something caught against the air filter, but no such luck.

I'm hoping its just some valve somewhere sticking.

Any ideas of what I should check?

Probably a hole in the exhaust.

My race car sounded like a fart can ricer when idleing with straight pipe (no cat or muffler). It was not bad when revved up, but too ricy at idle.

I bet it is a headder gasket leak. My 944 sounded like a riced out lawn mower when I had this problem.

Mine sounded a bit like this, but it sounded like it was from under the car, towards the front. The one day I came around a corner and BBBBRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

I had a small crack/leak in the exhaust just in front of the cat, it turns out. The loud noise was the crack breaking off completely and let me tell you, it was loud.

I would have an exhaust shop take a look and see where there's a crack of bad gasket, because if it lets go completely, it's noisey as hell.

I am currently having the same exact problem - fart can noise at around 3K RPM - acutally a good shift indicator on the street - "don't let it sound like that - shift on-time" type of a deal.

I know for sure - I have a crack in the catalyst right as it connects to the exhaust. I don't have stock catalytic converter (an aftermarket one for smaller 4-cyl cars I put just to pass smog). Well it burned through and is now making noise. When the car is hot, it seals and sounds fine. I am looking for an alternative solution - maybe a legal high flow replacement, or a junk yard stock unit. Or may be another generic one...

For now I am living with noise....

sasha: I got mine patched up for $50 at an exhaust shop. You might want to see how much it would be, at least for now.
