I don't have any good info on the trans specs, except an old audi 5000 manual, and I noticed the my pinion shaft has some endplay, maybe a few thousandths.
I am trying to diagnose a noise in the trans and have only taken off the side cover to look around so far. I'm suspecting a pinion shaft bearing but nothing jumps out at me yet. The ring gear faces seem to be a bit scuffed. The car has 100K. The diff bearing that I can see looks OK, and it does not seem to have any endplay when assembled.
From what I read on others the pinion shafts seem to need some bearing preload, which would imply no endplay.
Anyone know where to find backlash, preload specs on these units? I'm sure the (expensive) factory manuals have it, but maybe somewhere else?
Thanks,
Art

I don't pretend to understand all this, but I looked it up in the factory manuals for you. Pinion gear has a preloaded tapered roller bearing. Preload is 0.15 mm, so I guess that means there is no pinion shaft endplay. Acceptable ring/pinion backlash during assembly is 0.1 mm to 0.2 mm. HTH!

art: pinion bearing preload is actually measured with a torque meter, with new bearings torque should be 200 to 400 Ncm, with used bearings 30 to 60 Ncm. There should certainly not be any endplay in the pinion shaft.
