When I have a serious post, it's on pg. 2 before you'd know it. And that is w/o n/e OT posts around

Examples of your technical answers are?

Not wanting to get involved w/the OT vs non-OT stuff, but... Awhile back, several people were trying to get a list of FAQs together to organize and put somewhere, conveniently on this list for the very purpose of keeping the board from getting overflowed. Whatever happened to that idea? It would have to help w/the large traffic flow here- I know I've been guilty of posting questions that have already been posted- sometimes I'm too lazy to go through the archives. Anyway, does anyone know what happened to the FAQ idea, and would it be possible to get one going, and/or do any of you think it would actually work?

Just an idea....

If you don't like it, don't read it.

Yes it is as easy as that.

If you don't have the self control to NOT click on a post labeled OT in the topic, then there's other issues that need to be addressed here.

You can move to the E-MAIL lists if you don't like all the OT stuff here.

Just going to make an observation here....so don't come after my first born or anything........wasn't THIS OT thread started by someone anti-OT?

Of course this is only my observation, and I'm off balance enough to have 2 of these cars! <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

I have no problem with some OT posts, especially since most of the people generating the posts clearly put "OT" in the subject line. While I believe that OT posts should be started sparingly, I think they add some spice to the board. What's wrong with getting to know each other a little better? as long as it doesn't get out of hand, and I don't think it has. If you don't like OT posts, then don't read them.

What I find most annoying is when people write subject lines that give little clue about the post. Subjects lines like "Need Help" are, in my opinion, bigger time wasters than OT posts. I imagine a lot of people, like me, simply skip these posts. Before I take the time to open a post (I'm on a 56K modem) I would like to know what it's about. If everyone were more precise with their topics, that would save us much more time than eliminating OT posts.

I kinda like the OT post. Don't bother me much. I tend to place calls for help on the Specific Forums rather than the 924/944/951/968 Discussion Forum. Someone care to look up the word "discussion"?

To the anti-OT guys,

Clicking to look at page 2 is so difficult?

And it is impossible to skip the subjects marked "OT". You are forced at gun-point to read the entire OT thread??

Lighten up, b/c there's nothing worse than a chronic whiner.

Ladies and gents.. we have gone over this.

<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=15&t=008014" target="_blank">Off Topic Thread 1</a>

<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=15&t=008055" target="_blank">Off Topic Thread 2</a>

Both were posted less than 2 weeks ago, and both got a mess of replies. Concensus was "DON'T FRIGGIN READ THEM IF THEY ANNOY YOU!"

Not to mention this.. a lot of the OT stuff leads into Porsche specific chat.

So, it seems the consensus is: most people find posts complaining about off-topic posts really annoying. Personally, I have no complaints with them as long as they may be of interest to more than a few people on the board. That requires some judgement, and some people are better at that than others, but life goes on regardless.

People come and go for different reasons, but the board lives on. I very much doubt anyone has left because of the frequency of OT posts.

I have noticed that some of our gurus seem to appreciate OT posts, and these are the guys we really need to keep around.

As for the FAQ, I can see it being a real pain to write versions that everyone would be happy with. All the information is searchable already, and I find it works pretty well. Some people just need reminders to use it. It's not that I think an FAQ is a bad idea, just that it would require a lot of work.

What might be helpful and fairly easy, especially for newbies, is a list of all the acronyms we use and their meanings.

In the end, if all the information everyone needed was in the archives, and no OT posts were allowed, where would the board be then? Replaced by an on-line database, that's where.

PS, if you want a board that move slowly, try the one for your specific car. These usually have at least several days' topics on page 1. Sure they have a lot less OT stuff, but maybe that's why there are a lot more people here on this board.

This board is fun and a tremendous resource just as it is.

I'm guilty of starting OT, but I also ask for, and give, help on Porsche issues. I can't answer the super technical stuff but I try to answer the stock, recurring questions... and when I need help I usually get an answer within an hour of when the question is asked. So where's the problem?

I wish one thing, however: I wish people would not post nudie pics. I like to read Rennlist when I'm on break at work, and I can't have pictures of nude women popping up on my screen. I manage the IntSec group, for heaven's sake... I'm supposed to be policing improper browsing, not doing it!

cheers

Thaddeus
