The Griffen compressor is an outstanding unit. It is one of the two primary replacement compressors (The other is Sanden) Both are good units with the Sanden being the cheaper of the two, but the Griffen is much quieter and a higher quality unit. I went with it instead of the Sanden, especially becuase the customer service is outstanding (you deal directly with them) instead of dealing with a middle man shop or dealer.

Did you do the install yourself, including the drier? How difficult was it and how long did it take you (including if you used a lift!)?
With the Kuehly adapter brackets, did everything fit properly (pulleys line up) and look professional?
I just found out the compressor on my 89 S2 is shot and I am debating my next move. Saw the Kuehl and the Sanden. My mechanic understandably leans toward OEM reman parts but I am looking at all of my options, including doing it myself.

It only took a couple of hours to get the system up and running. I didn't have to make any modifications. I understand the mechanics leaning towards OEM as many aftermarket items are of inferior quality. It is not the case on this. It's a much quieter and better compressor than the stock unit. Even remans will cost about the same as a Sanden or Kuehl. It was my choice and I'd do it again. The best part of the deal is the service from Jim at Griffin. He'll talk you through any problems you encounter whenever you need it. Remember, you'll need a new drier no matter what anybody else tells you, buy it at the same time.

Well, I just checked the automotion catalog and they're selling rebuilt compressors, sans clutch, for $225.95.
I called and the sales rep told me they haven't had any complaints or problems with the rebuilt units. Anyone have any experience with the Automotion rebuilt compressors? They offer a 30 month warranty.

I have been doing a lot of research on this and that Automotion (Performance Products) rebuilt Nippon compressor is the least expensive I have found (and they have the longest warrenty I have seen). However, just an FYI that they have by far the highest core charge at $250 (according to the catalog). Most places warn that your core has to be in good condition to get the core charge back. If you think yours is rebuildable, that's a great deal. But if you're sketchy on it, you risk more than doubling the price.
The least expensive remanufactured Nippon (oem) compressor I have found with a reasonable core charge is Hancock industries

They quoted me $269.96 for compressor (I assume w/o clutch) with a $100 core charge.
