Since I got my 944, I have added:
new stereo (Porsche/Becker CDR-220)
new speakers (Blaupunkt)
new steering wheel (Porsche 968 Club Sport)
new floor & rear deck mats (Lloyd's superheavyweight)
painted wheel caps
new p-script cloth for seat centers
tinted windows
dash covers (velour, which was awful...and Coverlay, which is decent)
I've also done an oil change, and added a few lightbulbs. I have done some minor interior retoration too (vinyl paint, etc.).
I've probably got a couple of grand in the cosmetic upgrades (which the interior sorely needed). Thankfully, the mechanicals of the car are holding up well (which was why I bought it in the first place!).
Porsche - there is no substitute, other than perhaps an addiction to crack.

I like the S4 a lot. With the APR suspension and some mild motor mods, they are sick. I am getting to the point in life where I need to start thinking about a sports sedan. (although if my wife and I spit out several kids, a 750IL will have to do.

My other option is my mothers '02 BMW 330XI Sport. You do not see many XI's out there. AWD, sport suspension, and plush sport interior. I drove it a bit this weekend at Waterfest, and I got more looks in that car than my buddy in his GTI, and this was at a VW event!! I love that car. I blew a ton of money on my 5 944s (like 15k in 9 months on my 86 951 doing my own maintenance and upgrading).
I figured it'd actually be cheaper and more fun to have a new Boxster S with a 4 year warranty. These cars look great, handle incredibly, and go pretty fast. So far (2000 miles), nothing but smiles. First oil change is next June.
I signed a 4 year lease and payments are about $600/month with zero down. There are two reasons why the rate is so low...(1) Porsche is offering a special money factor for the Boxsters and (2) The residuals are very high for the Boxsters.
If you really think about it, the idea of leasing a new Porsche under warranty is very economical and very fun!
I've been making payments by Ebaying my spare 944 parts...and so far haven't spent a cent of work-related income on the car.

that iX sounds pretty nice- I've always liked them- they ARE rare too, AND, I beleive one of the best weight distrib uted AWD cars out there- aren't they somewhere in the 53/47 range? Maybe if I can ever get a decnet job, so I can get soem $ together, I can come stay at a nice hotel there in Ohio and pay you to do my LED's (and have some fun too of course)- then I could check it out- I don't know of ANY around here... Know any good jobs up that way?

i just purchased my 79 924 recently.. money spent:
$700 (the car, and all spares, previous owner was a good friend)
but.. i have all my friends receipts. he has spent about $5000 over the past 4 years on it.
right now the 924 is just outside of pittsburgh PA (I live in FL). It is being stored along with my gf's dad's italian cars (79 alfa GTV, my GF's 1970 OTAS, and a slew of Lancia flavias and flaminias).
my GF's dad has better resources than we do here, so the car is there for its restoration. That and to have the car towed from Ithaca NY to Lakeland FL is a hell of a lot less convient than having it towed from Ithaca NY to Pittsburgh PA. (the 924's engine is in the process of an overhaul).

I've got about $4500 worth of repairs over the last 3 years. Did most of the work myself including rebuilt turbo, everything rubber under the hood, all motronic fuel injection parts except the dme & klr, oil cooler seals, all brake pads, coolant hoses, a/c repair, new radiator, cam housing seal, various factory tools, resealed upper bal shaft housing, fixed cruise control, all fluids flushed, and steam cleaned underneath, replaced missing heat shields and belly pan, and some more stuff i'm fogetting. Worth every penny spent!!!

OK, I'll play here, too... '94 6-speed coupe, had it 2+ years, 16K miles (total now 71K).
New struts & shocks, M030 sways, "downgrade" from the 18's that came on the car to stock 16's (street driven on rough streets), 12-disc changer that mates with the PO's Alpine head unit. That's all the big stuff.
Little stuff is heater valve, a couple of relays, accessory belts (twice; screw Dayco!), engine & tranny oil changes, voltage regulator & battery, sunroof gears (now have spares), not much else. Will need belts in another 5K or so, and I may do the Variocam then also. I'm expecting to do the clutch in about 10K. Most of the labor is 'free'...
All the big ticket stuff was at the beginning, but it's still not as reliable / solid feeling as my old '88 na. Need to drop the starter for a clean & lube... just started occasionally not engaging this AM.
