I have about 2700 bucks into mine after a year and a half. Lots of that stuff was unnecessary (fun stuff). Needed repairs constitute only 1,000 or so of that figure. Same as I spend on my old Volvo per year. Typical for a 10+ year old car.

I have a 3 ring binder that is FULL of receipts. I started to add it up one day (about 4years and $8k dollars ago), and decided it against it.

I love the way the car drives, and how it feels. Now, I do need to have the car repainted, the air conditioning fixed, the seats repaired, the dash cracks fixed, the guages are wacky, the fuel filler neck has issues, and the headlights won't go down. I am always about $3k from having this car perfect...it kills me. My wife is sick to death of it.

I bought the car in 94/95 for $5k. I have since put at least twice that in the car. That does however include a 89 Turbo S motor. (My mechanic told me it was cheaper to buy and install the new motor, than to fix the leaks, etc on the old.

That also includes, 4 cross drilled rotors, Koni's, coil-over suspension for the front, etc.

The part that kills me is that I would have to spend A LOT more money to get a car that performs as well as mine. The Boxster is not even close, a new 911 is, but I don't want to type up that kind of money in today's economy. I was thinking about getting a new BMW M3.

If you want a good laff go to the BMW dealership and ask for an M3. There is a huge wait, and you know what you get for waiting....a huge markup. (Gouging is more accurate). I decided I could wait 1 year or so to get the new M3, and then I read about the self destructing motor issue, the car is not ready for the public yet....

Oh well.

The trick, pay when you can. Enjoy what you got, and hope the world doesn't catch on to the value of these machines. Good cars like these stay priced low, and only the fans appreciate them (much like the NSX).

Uhhh, I think that is very reasonable. My receipts were closer to $30,000 for 16 months!!!

That is what I keep telling myself. What car can I get for $20-25k that gives me the feeling the 951 does? None.. I have looked. About the only thing I would get now is a 928 S4, and that would put me in the same place I am.

Now an Audi S4 would really be nice, but I could not find a newer one for $25k if I tried.

I've got a bit over $20,000 in upgrades and $9,000 in "maintenance" in just under 5 years. It's amazing how fast it adds up when you do expensive suspension modifications, transmission work, clutch replacement, wheels and tires (twice) etc.

Aack! - having just returned from a trip through the Cascades via HWY20 in the minivan (actually, a caravan of 3 of them) and almost delaminating the tread from my tires...

Just did a rough estimate including general wear and some improvments, and I am under 1700 (high because of new tires, clutch and front seal and belts) for the year at roughly 20,000 miles with gas at $1.55 and insurance I am up to ~$.23 a mile, not to bad maybe I should get a little meter and a coin slot off an arcade game and charge $.25 a mile.

I've got a fat file folder full of receipts, and there's no way I'm going to add them up! Never was one to use that Quiken (sp?) accounting software, but if I did, half the pie chart would be 944 stuff (more modifications than repairs, thankfully).

What's nice about our cars is that they've pretty much bottomed out on depreciation, so we're not losing money there. And insurance costs and registration (esp. here in CA) are SO much lower than for a new car. Plus, I actually get a smug sense of satisfaction out of doing some of the trickier repairs myself...clutch job next!!! <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" /> <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

I've got $23K in mine in 33 months- that includes the original $9K cost of the car. But $14K in 30 months for ~32K miles- DAMN! That's over $500/month just to keep it running- it's about $.44/mile. ASSUMING I could get $12K for my Turbo S right now, then I'd have paid almost $.35/mile...

Also, those of you who really throw your reciepts away- I hope you don't ever wreck your cars. I had thrown just over $6K into my '89 Integra, that would have been valued around $3K by itself, when I totalled it- I got $6400 for the car b/c of those receipts- of course, I lost $1K for the deductible- I now have a $500 deductible for the 951. Anyway I wouldn't be bitching about mine if it were in excellent condition right now, but considering what I have in it, it's in terrible condition- I don't have very much done to it at all either, except for Powerhaus head, 968 door panels, mild stereo stuff, Iceshark headlights, short shifter w/Momo **** & wheel, and re-finished Club Sports...

the '89 engine you put in yours- was it brand new? A crate engine? I really need to rebuild mine and would love to know about this- I want to do a larger turbo w/chips & injectors, but plan to do everything else about stock....

you and I have some similar tastes- I keep thinking about the S4 myself- even at $40K, a brand new one wouldn't be much more than I'm spending right now, and, it would be nice to have something under warranty. Too bad those things are SO heavy w/such horrible weight distributions- otherwise...

There are a lot of cars out there that are under $40K that would very well compare to a Turbo S, but, there are too many factors involved to really compare them all- our cars are hatch backs, whereas an Audi S4 or E36 M3 is a sedan (or coupe, but still sedan type car). We have a pretty unique car overall, considering it's layout and performance, especially considering it's potential. I mean, hell, a new GT Mustang would hold it's own well, but I don't like the looks nearly as much, especially the interior. If going for something used, you have a LOT of choices, many that are able to beat our cars in pretty much every way, like Supra TT's & RX-7TT's, etc- but, they have their own problems, and can cost just as much to keep if you get the wrong one....

HWY20 is the most beautiful drive in the area, bar none. I've driven it in a few cars, but not yet in the porsche. I loooove that trip.

Here is the deal with the motor. My 86 orginal motor had many leaks....so many that my mechanic told me it would be cheaper for me to pull it apart, and have him reassemble the whole thing (something to that effect). He said that he knew a guy with a 89 Turbo S ( I know, they were all S motors in 89...) that was in great shape. He called the guy and the guy showed up in a totally tricked out 95 968 convertible. He opened the hood, and there was the 951 motor. He loved the look and updates of the 968, but loved the power, and ez to increase power nature of the 951. I drove the car around, met him a few days later and made the deal.

The reason he was selling the motor was that he was building another one from scratch with all ultra high end parts. (He had something like 11 grand in the new motor). Anyway, my mechanic did the swap. (He charged me 10hours labor....which is 3543534653 times faster than i could have done it.

I love the added power, but it takes a while to adjust to the boost coming on later. The motor that I bought already had the Fire-ring HG, etc.

So far so good. The motor has been the most reliable part of this car...its the ancilliaries that are killing me!!

Dont make me add up what the original owner spent on my car before I bought it. This guy was **** about every little thing, makes me feel good when most likely 70 % of the car is brand new! Shoot! *knock on wood fast!* I will add it up one day.
