Question Help with Torque Tube Removal

Question for those who have removed the torque tube from a 944/951: is it possible to remove the torque tube without removing the torsion bar tube? I’m talking about physically removing the tube from the car, not just sliding it back to make room for the clutch. If this is possible, how do you get the rear bell housing to clear the spare wheel well in the back? Or is there some other approach I’m just not seeing?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

No.

THere is not enough room to drop it either direction with out removing the torsion tube. Sorry, would be nice :-)

Why are you removing, or rather, why are you thinking of removing the torque tube?

Besides, the end of the torque tube that mounts to the transaxle has half the housing press fit onto it...it will never slide thru that tiny opening between the torsion tube and the body.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reply John.

After staring at it for awhile I’ve come to the same conclusion. At first I thought I could sneak it by the spare wheel well by tilting it down as I pulled it out, but it just too long. Oh well! I have half of the back-end of the car apart anyway, so I might as well go for broke!

The bearings are bad. It was making an ungodly squeaking noise at idle, and now that I’ve got the TT disconnected I can feel that the bearings are about to give it up.

Again, thanks for the help.
