Just for y'all's entertainment, here's something I wrote about 4-5 years ago for a newsgroup when we were discussing Spam...

"Don't you just love Spam? It comes in so many flavors:

"**** Spam" (AKA "Sperm Spam"): Not fit for human consumption,
especially if you're under 18.

"MLM-MMF Spam" (AKA Scam-Spam"): How dumb do you think we are? Maybe
I'd send you a piece of well-used TP (or maybe a fart in a baggie), but
it'd just be a waste of $.32. Besides, it's illegal to send anything
that toxic thru the USPS. <phew!>

"Chain - Pyramid Letter Spam" (AKA "I'm Pitifully Gullible, and I Hope
Somebody Else Is Too Spam"): Like I just said, how dumb do you.... BTW,
hope you reported all that 'income' to the IRS, since I forwarded your
Spam to them..... <snicker>

"Computer Software Spam": Look, Dipstick, webtv'er's don't have a CD-rom
drive, a hard disk, or even a computer.... I _can't_ use this crap.
Clean up your mailing list, instead of making enemies needlessly. Do
you realize how obvious it makes your cluelessness? Do you care?

"E-mailing List Spam" (AKA "Spam for Wanna-be Spammers"): They love to
brag about all the valid eddresses on their CD.... so why in hell are
they sending the Spam to _me_ (see above re. webtv & cluelessness)?
Maybe their list is less perfect than they say? Nawww.....

"We Visited Your Web Site Spam": Look, Dum-bass, I know I don't have a
web site. I looked just to be sure after getting your Spam. Why start
out your sales pitch with a lie? Do you really think this makes me want
to send you my credit card number? D'oh!

" $ 6.00 Viagra Spam": Do you really think I'm gonna take pills sent to
me by somebody who uses a fake email addy? Yeah, right. Hello???

"Hot Investment Tip Spam" (AKA Son of Scam-Spam"): Does the FTC know
about you guys? Does your mommy? See earlier comments about fake
eddresses & credit card numbers.... and farts in baggies.

"Five Copies Of The Same Spam": Now, I _really_ wanna do business with
an idiot like you! So pitiful you can't even figure out how to use the
dam' bootleg mailing software..."D'uh, I wonder what this key does?
D'oh!"

Jim, checking his medication, gone back to work now...."

That was my take back then.... since, it's become a lot more violent.

Jim, still need to check my meds...

There is a way to remove the pop-up ads from AIM,

1. Go to your AIM directory (c:\program files\aim95\) or wherever you installed AIM to.

2. Delete the file "advert.ocm".

3. Rename the file "admin.ocm" to "advert.ocm".

4. That's it!

Also if any of you get pissed at the ads on kazaa like I do, you should definitely download Kazaa Lite. You used to have to pay for it but now it's free. All the good things about kazaa, now with faster more productive searches, NO ads at all, faster downloads, and NO spyware...It's really great if you download alot of music.

Patricia - Thanks for the tip on MailWasher, but it isn't made for MACs!

My spam seems to think I'm a guy, and offers me odd things to "please my girl." You'd at least think they'd check the sex of whom they are spamming! Much of it is sooo rediculous.

So, I have my general use email on hotmail, then my private ones for work. That seems to work okay, no spam on my work email.

I don't think SPAMers really care what they send to whom. I get equal amounts of junk about increasing my breast size and my ***** size and so does my fiance.

The disgusting thing is that I get SPAM that looks to be kiddie ****. That really makes me sad/sick.

Regarding filters, I have used Spamassasin (thanks Deni) which is absolutely great, but only on my PC. I need something on my Exchange server. I have some ideas (GFI. Again, thanks Deni) but haven't gone ahead with them yet.

Manning: thanks for the tip on blocking IP addresses; I'll give that a try. My ISP uses Brightmail to filter for spam, but I've got to wonder how some of the stuff gets thru with obvious porno words in the subject line. I have started setting up rules in Outlook to send that stuff straight to the DELETED file.

Since I changed my e-mail address and started being really careful about who I make it available to, I have received zero spams. Tnat's been for the last year or so.

You only need to give it to one spammer and it will get sold over and over again. A good clean list is worth a lot of money.

My old hotmail account is another story. At least 10 a day.

I've been getting some as well. Unfortunately it seems to always be from some address such as aasssdroeurasd@yahoo (or hotmail). To top it off the remove links never work.

They don't really originate from those domains, the senders are faking the address. What you can do though is look at the headers, find the originating IP, locate that domain owner and contact them. If they don't take care of it I've seen them shut down!!

Mark, <a href="http://www.lavasoft.com" target="_blank">www.lavasoft.com</a> for adaware is a good start for spyware. Zonealarm, the free version, is also a good software firewall to help keep you somewhat anon while out and about on the web.

Hey D. Autry,

Yeah, we have tracert'ed some of the addresses back to as far as we can and have reported our concerns to the IP's owner. We also block a lot of IPs right at the router, and/or have our ISP block them. Trouble is, sometimes you can't tracert an address back to the source very easily. There have been several that I can get to the address with a browser, but a tracert times out at the first or second hop. They could have tracert or ping requests blocked or they could simply be IP spoofing.

Renn,

Watch how many rules you set up as there is a size limit to the rules file in Outlook. Make sure you keep your rules nice and tight without a bunch of overlap.

Michelle,

Feel free to rant about this one, it makes me sick too.

I have been struggling to find a way to do something about this since the first time I posted a request for help regarding that sickening subject. I recall folks posted a couple sites to try for help regarding this but I couldn't get much help from them. If you have other ideas of anything else I can do let me know. It is really sick and twisted that people are into this stuff, I mean they are just children for crying out loud!!! The sender of one of the SPAMs actually had the audacity to claim it wasn't illegal because they were "art" photos and not porno. WTF difference does that make, they are still just little kids!!!

I guess the biggest problem with fighting some of the kiddie **** ******** is that they seem to originate from former eastern bloc countries of from Asia.

Manning, you might try doing a Google search on 'Spamcop'. Not sure of all the details, but as I understand it, it is an organized effort to fight Spam. I don't know if it's any good, and this is not a recommendation. I'm pretty sure that they have a usenet "Spamcop" NG, just not sure which hierarcy it's under (alt, soc, sci, etc.). I can find out if you need to know.

Jim, occasionally likes fried Spam...
