Default A/C doesn't work

This moring, A/C on my 1991 S2 functioned normally. But this evening, when I pressed down the A/C switch on the climate control panel, there was no cold air out of the vent, and I don't hear the clicking sound I normally hear when the A/C switch is pressed down, but the little yellow light on the switch was still on. Does this mean that the switch is bad, or there are other problems?

+1 ^ Windows down, sunroof up.

Start with the relay, and if it checks out.... good luck. Some have trouble with the clutch on the AC compressor, others with the pressure switch on the power steering pump, others with the climate control unit itself, others with general shorts in the wires.

I've found and fixed several problems with my climate system.... and still no AC.... but I do have heat when and where I want it lol....... good luck

Just had this happen to my 91 951. Is hot air coming out of the vents? If so, you may have a broken heater clip.

In the driver side footwell, right above your right knew when driving, is a black plastic cover. Get in there and remove the cover. Look for a broken white clip that should be holding the climate control solenoid rod.

Do a search for this, it is well documented and just may be the cheapest fix ever on your car!

Part numbers are,
Plastic support: 944.572.314.00
Metal retaining clip: 944.572.217.00

Good luck!

Could be a number of things. But first things first -- have you suddenly lost refrigerant through a leak that has developed in the last day? On the S2 there is a safety switch that means the clutch on the compressor will not engage even if the switch is on if the AC pressure drops below a safe level. This is to prevent compressor damage.

So go to a shop and verify refrigerant pressure as a first step. Continue to troubleshoot from there (e.g., applying power directly to the compressor to see if the clutch is operational, etc.)

Regarding the comments that 944 AC doesn't work: Of course it does. The truth is, _nothing_ works on an undermaintained 944. Definitely not low-maintenance cars... but you probably knew that.

That's on ALL refrigerant pumps. From an S2 to a Kennmore side by side refrigerator.

That's good advice. Only one thing to add....if you plan on getting into this yourself, you can get a set of gauges for under $50. You'll need them if you want to add more refrigerant or if you need to evacuate the system after fixing a reefer line problem. If you have an air compressor that can put out about 4 CFM, you can get a vacuum pump for under $40. At that point, you're pretty well set to do all of it yourself.

And here's a good starting reference:

But that all depends on just how greasy you want to get in the process.
