So, I just replaced my old worn out shifter(the metal piece) and after installing the new one I noticed that there isn't a hole for a cotter pin on the new one. Is there a special c-clip or something that is supposed to go on the end to keep the linkage bar from falling off? What am I missing? Should i just drill a cotter pin hole?

On my 87 there is an E-clip that holds the shift rod on the shifter. Any auto parts or even any hardware store will have it.
If you leave the boot off you can drive it to the store- just hold the rod on as you shift, that way you can get the correct sized clip on the first trip.
Mine used to pop off so guess how I learned this driving technique.

Aaaahhhhhh! I got it. Went down to home depot and used a 9/16" c-clip to hold it in. Looks like it ought to work out really well. Amazing how worn the old shifter was.

I battled that circlip long enough to find another fix. The clip that Porsche spec'd is good for one use only (maybe) because it doesn't retain shape well. I found an external snap ring that works perfectly - install with 90o bent tip snap ring pliers. Snap rings work many times better than circlips - sometimes, unfortunately
