Default Wheels: Paint vs Powdercoat

Okay so I am redoing my 3 piece wheels and I dont know whether to paint them or have them powdercoated.

I will blast all the parts beforehand.

The problem I see with paint now is color choice. The colors I want would be tough to get in a paint can.

So please share your experiences with painting wheels or having them powdercoated.

Also, If I go the powdercoat route, where is a good spot around the Philadelphia/ Allentown/ Reading area to have them done? Will any professional powdercoating place be good enough?

Thanks,
Alex

You can get a set of 16's done for $75 here...so long as you blast them before bringing them in.

$265 a set includes media blasting (no sand) and minor curb rash repair.

Try...

http://www.kingcoatings.com/

They are in Allentown. My cousin has used them in the past for custom motorcycle frames and pieces. I know they do nice work I am just not sure how cheap they are.

I just got off the phone with the guy from king coatings and he said it would be about $45 a wheel if I have them blasted and ready.

Powder coat no question. Here's my results with GT3 wheels on my old 996 Aero coupe. Cost me $200 (or so) to get them powder coated semi-gloss black.

Can you guys offer me some insight to blasting and prepping aluminum for powder coat?

I've tried searching on google and stuff but I haven't found any really good answers. What media should I use??? What psi?

Thanks,
Alex

The ap2 wheels look great btw

I'm surprised no one has thrown in the claim about powder coating weakening the wheels. I'm not saying it does or doesn't, but that does usually come up in these discussions.

I did the research and and posted the results a while ago. It doesn't.

- The temps are lower than required to "harden" aluminum (harder metals get "brittle")
- and the time in which the powder bakes on is minimal

And...FWIW, I tracked the **** out of those GT3 wheels and had a good "off" with them. No problems.

+1000 for powdercoat.

Did what I thought was an excellent job of prepping, painting and polishing my Fuchs, they looked great for a few months but now the paint is not looking good. For single piece wheels I would not hesitate to powdercoat them.

Too my horror though, I just bought a set of OZ 3-piece wheels and was quoted $250 a wheel to have the centers powdercoated black, most of the cost I presume is to dismantle and reassemble the wheels. I am leaving them annodised silver.
