Default Which muffler/resonator?

Hello, all. I've been enjoying my new exhaust, which is a 3" system flowing through a Spin Tech- Super Pro Street resonator. It sounds great, for the most part. However. It is on the loud side (I was afraid of the muffler being too quiet when I was looking for one; and I was drunk when I bought it online lol). There is also a notable amount of rasp, and all around nastiness when I let off the throttle anywhere above 4k. Aaaaaand, there is one spot between 2100 and 2300 RPM where it goes from a nice lope to a Honda-esque tone that isn't apealing at all.

I'm confident, that if I can muffle the tone a bit, then it will sound great. But I don't want it too quiet. I love the gurgle this motor makes and I like how it doesn't sound like any other 4 cylinder out there. With that said, I'm getting rid of the test pipe, and having a pre-muffler put in. I've been looking at Moroso- Spiral Flows, and SLP- Loudmouth2's.

I want to get rid of the tinny rasp and nasty tones, but retain that open sound with the "lub-lub" sound that I have now. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Put a cat back in. That simple. Even a high flow one.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. I'm not in an emissions state, so I don't have to worry about meeting any standards, and I'm not super excited about blowing out another cat, but I may just go ahead and do eet.

The Borla XR-1 Muffler sounds really good on the SFR Exhaust.

I already have a muffler at the end of the exhaust, that I'm mostly happy with. I need something like a bullet style muffler to go in the mid-pipe. The Spin Tech has GREAT tone, but it doesn't control rasp very well. I just need to quell that.

If you are not going to buy a high flow cat have a glasspack or cherrybomb type installed on the mid pipe. Your right it will get rid of the Honda esqe sound and the Raspberries. Should maybe improve bottom end by adding a little backpressure. I had a Techtonics exhaust with a Borla muffler on my Jetta and loved the sound.

Do not want backpressure.

I'm gonna try an SLP LoudmouthII. Had a Cherry Bomb on another car. Not impressed. Essentially the same design, but I like the sounds I've heard on other cars sporting them.

I installed the stock resonator (stock, at least, on 88 and later cars I think?) and an xr-1 after the stock cat. It sounds good but it's a bit boomy for highway cruising. I think this wouldn't be as bad if it was a 2.5" model (I got the xr-1 from a junkyard for $20 and it was at least 3")

I get a lot of compliments on it from total strangers and friends alike. So you should look for one of the stock resonators if you don't have one already; they'll be cheap!
