Default Transaxle Driveshaft Seal Replacement easy?

My driveshaft seals are seeping oil and I was wondering how easy it is to replace these. Is it simply a matter of unbolting the CVs, removing the shaft, pulling out the old seal and pressing in the new?

Do I need any "special" tools except a 12pt socket?

Is it easy to press in the new seal with a makeshift press (large socket?).

Anyone done this? How did it go?

It is relatively easy. There is also a 12 point bolt that holds the axle flange into the trans but I'm pretty sure it is the same size 12 pt as the CV's. I used a large socket and carefully tapped them in.

I just did this, its pretty easy. I used a $8 dollar seal tool from Harbour Freight to set the seal. Going to put the CVs back in today. IIRC the axle shafts on my car were held with an allen bolt.

Be careful when driving in the new seals. One can bottom out, but the other side seal has no stop (I forget which side). It's possible to drive it in too far.

Eric, if you do this, let us know the details -- I've got a couple of seals tucked away I bought ages ago when I noticed mine were leaking a bit. Just something that has never risen to the top of the "todo" list, but now seems like as good a time as any....

Very easy job. The axle flange bolt is a 6mm allen.

From reading I thought it was a 12 point (triple square) 8mm bolt? (I've got an S2, if that makes a difference.)

I guess I'll find out in about 2 weeks when I change the seals.

It looks like I'll have to remove the exhaust to get access to the left hand side CV joint. Has anyone been able to change the seal without removing the exhaust?

I have a sfr bullet and I don't have to but it makes the job easier all of the trannies I've rebuilt have had 6mm allens in the axle. Be sure to tap your sockets into the bolt heads because they easily strip make sure there isn't alot of grease in the heads as well. I replaced all of mine with allens instead of the cheeseheads.

Eric,

How did you get on with this job? Or is it still pending?
